Defense Dominates As Lady Buffs Rout Aggies

LAWTON, Okla. - The West Texas A&M University women's basketball team opened a huge 46-16 halftime lead and coasted to its sixth-straight win and 10th in last 11 games with a 91-52 rout of Cameron University, in a Lone Star Conference crossover game Saturday at CU's Aggie Gymnasium at Lawton, Okla.
The Lady Buffs led by as much as 44 several times in the second half, and limited CU to 30.8 percent (16-52) from the floor and 27 turnovers. The Lady Aggies had 19 turnovers at halftime and only three field goals on 3-20 (15.0 percent) from the field.
WTAMU's defense also limited CU's leading scorer Kimberle Woods to only two points on free throws, 11 points below her season average.
The Lady Buffs shot 46.2 percent (30-65) from the field, including 11-27 (40.7 percent) from 3-point land.
Senior guard Carlee Howard led six Lady Buffs in double figures with 14 points, 11 in the first half, and drained four treys. Junior guard Suni Jo Petty netted 13 points, 10 before halftime. Junior forwards Celeste Stevenson and Vasha Adams along with sophomore guards Tiffany Lewis and Jennifer Brock all tallied 11 points apiece.
Stevenson pulled down a team-high seven rebounds as WTAMU held a slight, 39-38, edge on the glass.
CU's Milisa Steen posted a game-high 19 points, followed by 15 from Tiffany Williams.
Both Cameron head coach and assistant coach were ejected with 3:58 left in the game due to three technical fouls being assessed to the CU bench.
The Lady Aggies dropped their third-straight game and fell to 6-7 on the year.
The Lady Buffs improved to 22-2 vs. CU all-time and are now 11-2 overall this season, and have a rematch with Eastern New Mexico University on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 6 p.m. at the WTAMU Event Center. The Zias defeated WTAMU , 76-57, on Dec. 16 at Portales, N.M. in LSC South action.
