WT Tops LSC North Division Central Oklahoma, 78-67

EDMOND, Okla. – The #12-ranked West Texas A&M Lady Buffs battled against top team in the LSC North, Central Oklahoma, with a final score of 78-67. The win lifts the Lady Buffs to a 16-1 overall record entering conference action, which is their best start since the 87-88 season. Central Oklahoma falls to 9-4 overall. The game was close throughout, tying at halftime at 34-34. With nine minutes remaining the game, WT started a 31-12 run that secured the lead that led to the win. The run included a three by Holly Isaacs (Sr., G, Brownfield, Texas), a UCO charge against Joni Unruh (Jr., G, Amarillo, Texas), and several fast break layups and free throws. The Lady Buffs once again dominated the offensive and defensive boards, outrebounding the Bronchos, 42-31. Both teams turned the ball over 20 times, but the Lady Buffs put up six blocks and eight steals. Jamie Simmons enjoyed a career game, scoring 32 points and posting double-double numbers with 11 rebounds. She shot 10-14 from the field and 12-20 from the free throw line to go along with three assists, three blocks, and three steals.
Also scoring double-digits was Joni Unruh with 15 points, and Holly Isaacs and Ceciley Johnson (Sr., C, Berkeley, Calif.) with 10 points each. Megan McLain tallied five points and Calllie Schniederjan, Aly Sherman, and Ashley Leven each contributed a bucket. Leven, Unruh, and Isaacs also each contributed six rebounds. Unruh led the team in steals with four. The Lady Buffs shot 48.1 percent from the field in the game and 64.1 percent from the charity stripe, while UCO shot 40.4 percent from the field and 54.2 percent from the free throw line. The second half proved tough for UCO as the Lady Buffs posted a 54.5 percent clip in the second half to the Bronchos 37.9 percent shooting percentage. WT starts LSC South Division play this week, starting on Jan. 13 at the First United Bank Center, taking on Texas A&M – Kingsville. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m. with the WT men’s game immediately following.
