CANYON, Texas - A solid team defensive effort lifted the No. 10 West Texas A&M women's basketball team to its 26th consecutive victory on its home court on Saturday night, as the Lady Buffs defeated Lone Star Conference crossover foe Northeastern State by a score of 64-43 at the First United Bank Center.

After the game's opening minutes saw both teams attempting to get a feel for one another, the Lady Buffs' defense began to clamp down, holding the Lady Reds without a point for nearly eight minutes. WTAMU was able to take control of the contest, outscoring the visitors 12-0 during that span to open a 19-7 advantage.

For the half, the WTAMU full-court pressure defense was able to force 14 NSU turnovers and take a 30-14 lead into the intermission. Senior Natalie Wheeler came off the bench to pace the Lady Buffs with eight points, connected on both of her shots from long distance in the frame. Fellow senior Kalee Carey also made an impression during the opening frame contributing seven points from her post position.

Point guard Jennifer Brock turned in a solid performance guiding the WTAMU offense, tallying 10 points, eight of which came in during the second half, and dishing out a game-high six assists.

Carey added seven points in the second half to give her a game total of 14, highlighting four Lady Buffs in double figure scoring.

Senior guard Emily Brister, the Lady Buffs' leading scoring on the season, tallied 10 points in the ballgame, leaving her just seven short of 1,000 for her WTAMU career.

The victory improves West Texas A&M's overall record this season to 13-2, while Northeastern State sees its mark drop to 8-5.

The Lady Buffs will return to action next Thursday, Jan. 11 as they travel to Durant, Okla., to take part in a Lone Star Conference crossover doubleheader. Tipoff for the women's contest is slated for 6 p.m.
