San Antonio, Texas - The West Texas A&M Buffaloes competed in the NCAA South Central Region meet Saturday afternoon, finishing 19th of 22 teams competing. The meet was contested at Live Oak City Park in San Antonio, Texas.

Competing over a 10 kilometer course, Jose Velazquez (senior, Hereford, Texas) led the Buffs with a 74th place finish and a time of 32:12. He was followed by Isai Saucedo (soph., Bovina, Texas), 97th, 36:04; Thomas Harris (sophomore, Amarillo, Texas), 105th, 35:28; Andrew Striley (freshman, Amarillo, Texas), 107th, 35:34 and Jarret Kachel (junior, Hooker, Okla.), 122nd, 36:43. Also competing, but not counted in the team scoring were Matt Kopansky (fresh., Toronto, Ont.), 131st, 37:39 and Erik Huerta (soph., Hereford, Texas), 139th, 38:42.

Saucedo's effort was a full two minutes better than his previous best 10 kilometer time.

The top three finishers in the men's division were from Abilene Christian. Julius Nyango took top honors with a time of 31:10.7, Daniel Maina was second with a 30:11.1 while teammate Cleophus Tanui was third witih a 30:20.6

Abilene Christian won the team scoring, followed by Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State. Those three teams, along with the top 10 individuals will advance to the NCAA Division II National Championships, to be held in two weeks.

 

 

"We ran a respectable race," said men's head coach Paul Sweetgall. "I was pleased with Jose's efforts, as he ran very close to his goal, and Isai (Saucedo) was a real bright spot for us.

"We have laid the foundation with our performances this season," Sweetgall continued. "Now, we'll work to get better for next season."
