Stillwater, Okla. - West Texas A&M placed 10th, overall, out of 27 teams in team scoring in the College/Junior college division of the Oklahoma State Cowboy Jamboree, held Saturday morning in Stillwater, Okla. The meet is considered one of the premier collegiate invitational cross country events. Leading the Buffs was Jose Velazquez (senior, Hereford, Texas) who placed 23rd with a time of 27:04. Also scoring were Thomas Harris (sophomore, Amarillo, Texas), 48th, 27:49; Andrew Striley (fresh., Amarillo, Texas), 65th, 28:22; Isai Saucedo (soph., Bovina, Texas), 72nd, 28:35; Jarret Kachel (junior, Hooker, Okla.), 84th, 28:53; Jarred Murray (fresh., Odessa, Texas), 109th, 29:38 and Matt Kopansky (fresh., Toronto, Ont.), 124th, 30:20. Competing for WT but not scoring were Erik Huerta (soph., Hereford, Texas), 156th, 30:23; Jesse Maldonado (fresh., Hereford, Texas), 163rd, 30:36 and Luis Flores (soph., Booker, Texas), 174th, 31:09. The men's division was won by Jonathan Cherono of Cowley County CC, brother of Lady Buff runner and winner of the women's division,Jeniffer Cherono, with a time of 25:02. "We had a very good day," said WT men's head coach Paul Sweetgall. "Finishing 10th out of 27 teams in a premier meet tells us that our program is headed in the right direction. Also, having each of our returning runners improve their times tells us that we are moving in the right direction with our training program." The Buffs return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 14, when they compete in the San Angelo Cross Country Classic, in San Angelo, Texas.
