Men's XC Takes Third at Buffalo Stampede
Sept. 12, 2009 CANYON, Texas - The West Texas A&M men's cross country team places third in the Buffalo Invitational on Saturday morning at the WTAMU Equestrian Center in Canyon, Texas. Joey Villarreal (FR, Amarillo, TX) led the effort for the Buffs finishing in eighth place with a time of 27:00. Garden City Community College totaled 27 points to take the victory, followed by Eastern New Mexico with 49 points and WT with 65. Rounding out the field was Texas A&M-Commerce with 91, UT-Permian Basin with 145, Oklahoma Panhandle State with 188, and Clarendon Junior College with 192. "Overall, it was a good day. It's always good to have the first race of the season behind you." said WT head coach Paul Sweetgall "We know where we stand, and can start taking steps to improve each time out." Buffalo Andrew Striley (SO, Amarillo, TX) finished 10th overall with a time of 27:27 followed by teammates Thomas Harris (JR, Amarillo, TX) in 12th with a 27:33 and Rolando Vasquez (JR, Altus, Okla.) in 15th with a time of 27:49. Also tallying points for WT were Robbie Ness (FR, Canyon, TX) in 26th with a 28:50 and Michael Janousek (FR, Conroe, TX) in 27th with a 28:54 followed by teammate Aaron Hibbitts (JR, Amarillo, TX) in 30th with a 29:11. Also running for WT but not registering scores were Jarrett Kachel (SR, Hooker, Okla.) in 32nd with a 29:21 and Jarred Murray (SO, Odessa, TX) in 54th with a 31:35.
"As a team we are well ahead of where we were a year ago" said Sweetgall "We have a very dedicated group of runners. I'm confident that we'll see progress with every race of the season." The next competition for the Buffs will be on Sept. 18 as they travel to Lubbock, Texas for the Texas Tech Open. |
