WTAMU Men Have Individuals Finish 19th and 21st At Buffalo Stampede

The West Texas A&M University women's cross country team finished second in the WTAMU Buffalo Stampede Season Opener Friday evening at the WTAMU Horse Center. The men's team had their only two individuals finish in the Top 20.

Junior Amy Garcia was the Lady Buffs top individual, placing fifth with a time of 21:02. Classmate Ruby Crox was seventh with a 21:17 time, just ahead of senior Stephanie Williams in eighth with a 21:31. Freshman Belinda Castanon was 12th with a 22:22 time, four seconds ahead of sophomore teammate Sharen Diggs in 13th. Freshman Nicole Lopez was 23rd with a 23:43, fellow freshman Kallie Gerstberger 27th at 24:35 and sophomore Shemika Sanford was 28th with a 24:57.

Angelo State University took top team honors, as the Rambelles had three finishers in the top five, paced by individual winner Trista McIntyre, who covered the 5K course in 19:05.

ASU had 29 points, WTAMU was second with 45 points, Eastern New Mexico Univeristy third with 64, followed by Southwestern Oklahoma State University in fourth with 83 points and Oklahoma Panhandle State University in fifth with 137 points.

On the men's side, ASU also took top honors with 26 points, with three runners in the top five, led by individual winner Trent Joseph's 21:30 time for the 4-mile course. ENMU was right behind with 29 points. WTAMU and OPSU did not have enough runners to qualify for the team standings.

For WTAMU, Victor Duran was 19th with a 25:58, while Ryne Erickson was 21st with a 27:52.

Both WTAMU men's and women's team will be in action at the Abilene Christian University meet next Friday, Sept. 9 at Abilene, Texas.
