LUBBOCK, Texas – The West Texas A&M Track & Field program underwent its first competition this past weekend when it competed at the Texas Tech Invitational, held at the Athletic Training Center in Lubbock, Texas.

Twelve men and three women, under the guidance of head coach Darren Flowers, comprised the Buff and Lady Buff contingent.

“The main objective was to get our feet wet and see where we are at and where we need to go with our program,” said WT head coach Darren Flowers. “Everyone competed really well in a tough environment. It gives us a standard and shows us where we need to be.”

On Friday night, Gage Meyer placed in a tie for seventh in the men’s high jump with a mark of 6’-05. His jump was the second best among the 15 competitors, with the final standings based on jump progression. North Texas’ Toby Edwards won the event with a jump of 6’-07.

The men’s distance medley relay quartet, comprised of Josh Braddock, Jarret Kachel, Jarred Murray and Aaron Hibbitts placed seventh with a time 11:51.21.

Saturday’s action was highlighted by Amarillo High product Dane Hamrick’s fifth-place finish in the men’s shot put. Hamrick recorded a distance of 46’-04.75 to place second among Division II competitors. WT’s Esteban Montemayor was 12th with a mark of 42’-10.25 and Cameron Armstrong placed 15th at 41’08.00.

Running unattached, Luke Irwin posted a time of 9:09.04 in the men’s 3000 meter run, finishing 12th overall but first among Division II runners. Thomas Harris clocked a 9:40.87 to place 19th, while Andrew Striley was 24th with a time of 10:04.25.

In the men’s 55 meter hurdles, Dimmitt native Ross Myatt clocked a time of 8.45, placing fifth in his qualifying heat. That time was good for 16th in a field of 28 competitors.

Jarret Kachel finished 15th out of 26 competitors in the men’s 800 meters, posting a time of 2:02.71.


 

 

In the women’s 200 meters, Jasmine Harris clocked a 28.81, while Josh Braddock recorded a time of 23.11 in the men’s 200 meters.

WT’s next outing will be Jan. 31, when they compete at the New Mexico Invitational, to be held in Albuquerque, N.M.
