West Texas A&M Track & Field Competes at McMurry Invitational

Stephenville, Texas – The West Texas A&M Track & Field program competed at the McMurry Relays, held Thursday at the Wilford Moore Stadium Track in Abilene, Texas.
Highlighting the Buffs’ outing were the performances of Josh Braddock in the 400 meters, Jose Velazquez in the 5000 meters in the shot put and Thomas Harris in the steeplechase. Thomas Harris, competing in the steeplechase, clocked a 10:23.59, just 10 seconds shy of the Wilford Moore Stadium record.
“Considering the wind was gusting up to 30mph, we had some outstanding performances today,” said WT head coach Darren Flowers. “This meet was a chance for us to see how we measure up against some of the conference teams and I believe that we have can compete with anyone.”
Braddock placed second in the 400 meters with a time of 49.98, just two-tenths of a second off the winning time. Velazquez also placed second, covering 5000 meters in a time of 16.24.70.
Ryan Mitchell clocked an 11.40 in the 100 meters, while Braddock ran a 22.84 to place 11th in the 200 meters. Also competing at 200 meters was Eldon Grimslid, who is training to compete in the decathlon (25.11).
In the 800 meters, Jarret Kachel was seventh with a time of 2:03.11, while Jarred Murray placed 14th with a time of 2:07.37. Kachel also competed in the 1500 meter run, placing seventh with a time of 4:18.55.
Ross Myatt placed sixth in the 110 meter hurdles (16.02), while Mitchell Ryan was seventh (16.07).
In the 400 meter hurdles, Myatt placed third with a time of 58.23.
David Gordon recorded a high jump of 5-11 ½ to place seventh, while Dane Hamrick was fourth in the shot put with an effort of 48-8 ¼, with Esteban Montemayor 12th 40-4 1/4() and Grimslid 13th (39-8 1/2).
On the women’s side, Jasmine Harris placed seventh in the 400 meters with a time of 1:05.32, while Mariana Chavira finished third with a time of 20:21.98 in the 5000 meters. Ashlee Covin clocked a time of 1:20.13 in the 400 meter hurdles.
The Buffs next competition will be April 9, when they compete in the Texas Tech Invitational, in Lubbock, Texas.
