Lubbock, Texas – The West Texas A&M Distance Medley Relay team took first place honors, highlighting the Buffs’ outing at the Texas Tech Open, held this past Saturday in Lubbock, Texas. The DMR quartet, consisting of Rolando Vasquez, Taylor Johnson, Jarret Kachel and Luke Irwin, took first place with a time of 10:41.25. Other notable performances included: Thomas Harris placing eighth in the 5,000 meters with a personal best time of 16:04.07; Mitchell Ryan placing 12th in the 55 hurdles with a personal best time of 7.93; high jumper Gage Mayer finishing fifth with a mark of 1.99 meters; thrower Shaun Wesley placing eighth in the Shot Put with a mark of 14.50 meters and thrower Dane Hamrick placing ninth with an effort of 14.38 meters; and middle distance runner Jarret Kachel placing 13th in the 800 meters with a personal best time of 1:57.83. “We did some great things this weekend and I saw a real competitive side to our men’s team,” said WT head coach Darren Flowers. “We really fought through some tough situations and raced as well as I have seen them race so far this year.
“The Distance Medley Relay dominated the event, but the race went out much slower than we would have wanted. We were hoping for a much faster time, but I was happy with the victory. We had success in a variety of different areas which means we are becoming a more complete team.” The Buffs’ next outing will come Feb. 12-13, when they compete at the Air Force Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo. |
