WT Distance Events Highlight Tech Invitational
Jan. 26, 2010
Lubbock, Texas – Luke Irwin placed third in the men’s 5,000 meters, while the Buffaloes’ Distance Medley Relay team placed fourth, highlighting the Buffs’ outing at the Texas Tech Invitational, held this past Friday and Saturday in Lubbock, Texas. Irwin, a freshman from Uxbridge, Ontario, ran a time of 15:56.88 in the 5,000 meters, placing third. Irwin was also a member of the Buffs’ Distance Medley quartet, which clocked a time of 10:32.75. Joining him were Jarret Kachel, Taylor Johnson and Andrew Sanders. “We saw some great competition this weekend,” said WT head coach Darren Flowers. “That was probably the most competitive meet we will go to all year. I was extremely proud of our effort this weekend. “In the overall results, it may not look like we did all that well, but we are improving steadily. Most of the schools there were Division I schools, and I have no doubt that we are seeing some of the best athletes in the nation right now. We really considered this weekend as a training weekend. I loaded our athletes up with many different events so we could work on our conditioning.” The Buffs' next outing will come Jan. 29-30, when they compete at the Lobo Challenge in Albuquerque, N.M.
