Mayer Hits NCAA Provisional Mark at Texas Tech Open
Jan. 18, 2010
Lubbock, Texas - Gage Mayer surpassed the NCAA Provisional qualifying standard in the high jump as West Texas A&M had two of the top three places in the event, highlighting the Buffaloes' performances at the Texas Tech Open, held Saturday in Lubbock, Texas. Mayer, the 2009 LSC outdoor high jump champion, cleared 2.05 meters in the high jump to place second. That mark ranks him eighth, nationally. Placing third was WT's Aaron Gordon, who jumped 1.95 meters. The pair were the top two collegian finishers in the event, as winner William Moses competes professionally. "I was really happy with the performance of our high jumpers," said WT head coach Darren Flowers. "Gage has hit the provisional qualifying mark and is among the top-10 jumpers in the country. Now, he must continue to improve on that performance in preparation for the Nationals. "I was also excited about how our short sprinters and hurdlers performed," Flowers continued. "We had three individuals that made finals in the 55 meter hurdles, and Ross Myatt and Mitchell Ryan are getting closer to the provisional standard each week." Aaron Flores placed fifth in the 55 meters with a time of 6.56 seconds, was third in the 200 meters with a time of 22.33 and placed sixth in the long jump with a mark of 6.67 meters. Teammate Mitchell Ryan finished sixth in the 55 meters with a time of 7.98 seconds. Shaun Wesley placed fourth in the shot put with a mark of 14.48 meters.
Jarret Kachel finished third in the 800 meters with a time of 1:59.68, while Luke Irwin doubled in the mile run (fifth, 4:32.79) and the 3,000 meters (seventh, 9:15.15). "Flores had a strong showing for his first meet, finishing fifth in the 55 meters and he is getting very close to the provisional mark for the long jump," Flowers said. "we are working hard and improving every week and I can't ask fro anything more than that." The Buffs next outing will come Jan. 22-23, when they again travel to Lubbock, Texas to compete in the Texas Tech Invitational. |
