#22 Buffs Set for Showdown with #7 Incarnate Word

TOUGH MATCHES AHEAD- The West Texas A&M Buffs continue their conference play when they travel to San Antonio, Texas on Sept. 25 to face #7 Incarnate Word starting at 7:00 p.m. CDT. The Buffs then stay in San Antonio to face St. Mary's on Sept. 27 at 12:00 p.m. CDT. THE RECORDS - The Buffaloes bring a record of 5-1-1 into this weekend, while Incarnate Word is 3-1-2 coming off their first loss of the season from Truman State University on Sept. 18. St. Mary's is 2-4-1 on the season. LAST WEEK - The #19 Buffs tied #12 Midwestern State Mustangs, 0-0, in their LSC Conference opener on Sept. 18 in Wichita Falls, Texas. The Buffs then returned home to defeat University of the Southwest on Sept. 20, 5-0. Nicki Nielsen (SO, Oelhlem, Denmark) scored a pair of goals in the victory. THE SERIES - In the last meeting against Incarnate Word, the Buffs topped the Cardinals, 1-0, on Oct. 13, 2008. WT defeated St. Mary's, 2-0 in their last meeting on Oct. 5, 2008. THE HEAD COACH - In 18 years at the helm of the men's soccer program, Lauffer has compiled a 220-99-22 (.679) men's overall record and a combined men's/women's overall record of 401-162-34 (.701). Lauffer achieved the 400 win plateau this past weekend as the Lady Buffs defeated UT-Permian Basin. The team has recorded 10 wins or more in all but two of Lauffer's seasons as head coach of the men's soccer program. WINS & TIES - The #19 Buffs tied their first conference game of the season after facing #12 Midwestern State on Sept. 18. The game ended 0-0. The Buffs then returned home and picked up another win after shutting out University of the Southwest, 5-0, on Sept. 20. Nicki Nielsen (SO, Oelhelm, Denmark) scored a pair of goals in the victory. RISING IN THE RANKS - After starting the season slotted in the 25th position in the National Soccer Coach's Association of America (NSCAA) poll, the Buffs have climbed to 22nd in the latest polls.
EVERSON SCORES - Ben Everson (JR, Middlesbrough, England) was named the LSC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 16 after scoring two goals during the Sept. 13 match against UT-Permian Basin. So far this season, Everson has a total of five goals. NIELSEN'S ACCURACY- Nicki Nielsen (SO, Oelhelm, Denmark) has a shot on goal percentage of 100% so far, after taking three shots with all three on goal. Nielsen scored a pair of goals during the Sept. 20 match against University of the Southwest. GARCIA IMPRESSES - Freshman Manuel Garcia (FR, Amarillo, Texas) already has a total of three goals so far this season, including scoring a pair of goals during Sept. 13 match against UT-Permian Basin. SAVES - Buff goalkeepers, Shane Taylor (JR, Keller, Texas) and Sebastian Furness (SO, Middlesbrough, England) have combined for 21 saves so far this season in just seven games. Last season, the goalkeepers combined for a total of 60 saves in 17 games. SHUTOUTS - The Buffs recorded another shutout this weekend against University of the Southwest (5-0) bringing up the total shutout tally to four games this season. The WT school record for shutouts is 10, posted last season. |
