West Texas A&M University men's soccer players Josh Fender and Shawn Carr repeated as Southwest Soccer Conference Players of the Week Awards, as Fender was recognized as the Offensive Player of the Week and Carr received Defensive Player of the Week accolades, announced today (Sept. 21) by the conference office.

The duo was acknowledged with the weekly award for the second straight week in their respective roles in WTAMU's 5-0 start to the season and climb to No. 11 in this week's NSCAA/adidas National Poll, which was released on Tuesday, hours before the Buffs were upset at Oklahoma City University, 1-0, for their first loss of the season.

Fender, a 6-4 senior forward from Richardson, Texas, led the Buffs with a goal and an assist in each of WTAMU's two matches last week, a 2-0 win at St. Edward's University on Friday and a 3-0 blasting of then-No. 5 Midwestern State University.

Freshman goalkeeper Shawn Carr was recognized as the SSC Defensive Player of the Week, as he posted four shutouts in WTAMU's first five matches.

Carr, a 6-0 freshman goalkeeper from Plano, Texas, was between the pipes for both shutouts, running his shutout collection to four in WTAMU's first five matches. His scoreless streaked was stopped at 440:22, with the goal at Oklahoma City.

WTAMU's 5-0 start to the season was the first time since 1999 that the Buffs have opened the season like that. In the SSC statistics, WTAMU leads the league in goals per game, goals allowed, goals against average and shutouts.

Individually, Carr leads the conference in goals against average, save percentage and shutouts, while Fender is tied for fourth in the league in both goals (four), assists (two) and points (10).

WTAMU returns home to host Northeastern State University and Missouri Southern State University on Friday and Sunday, Sept. 23 and 25, respectively.
