The West Texas A&M University men's soccer went automotive on this week's Southwest Soccer Conference Player of the Week Awards as senior Josh Fender was received the Offensive Player of the Week Award and freshman Shawn Carr was recognized with Defensive Player of the Week accolades. The duo was acknowledged for their respective roles in WTAMU's 3-0 start to the season, which got the attention of the national voters, as the Buffs appeared at No. 21 in this week's NSCAA/adidas National Poll.

Fender, a 6-4 forward, from Richardson, Texas, led the Buffs to a 3-0 start in SSC play by scoring his first goal in a 3-0 win over Eastern New Mexico University last Tuesday and adding another in WTAMU's 6-1 rout of St. Mary's University on Friday.

Carr, a 6-0 goalkeeper, from Plano, Texas, posted two shutouts, including a 1-0 win over defending SSC champion University of Incarnate Word on Sunday, and ended the week with a scoreless streak of 250:49 as the Buffs opened the year with three wins. He had five saves on the week.

Freshman goalkeeper Shawn Carr was named SSC Defensive Player of the Week, joining senior teammate, forward Josh Fender who was the Offensive Player of the Week, in making the awards look like an automotive shop.

WTAMU's 1-0 win over Incarnate Word snapped a five-match losing streak to UIW, as it was the Buffs first win over the Cardinals since WTAMU's 2001 season-opener.

The Buffs first 3-0 start since 2002 earned WTAMU a spot in the Top 25, as the Buffs appear at No. 21 in this week's NSCAA/adidas National Poll. That sets up a match-up of nationally-ranked teams with Sunday's showdown with traditional rival Midwestern State University, who climbed one spot to No. 5 in this week's poll. MSU also sits atop the NSCAA/adidas Midwest Region Poll, while WTAMU is third.

Incarnate Word (6th), Northeastern State (9th) and St. Edward's (10th) also appear in the Midwest Regional Poll.

WTAMU hits the road this weekend to play a pair of Southwest Soccer Conference matches. The Buffs kickoff on Friday, Sept. 16 at Austin, Texas against St. Edward's University. WTAMU will then face traditional rival Midwestern State University on Saturday, Sept. 18 at Wichita Falls, Texas. Midwestern and West Texas A&M are the only two undefeated teams left in the conference so Sunday's showdown is very important for both teams.

The Buffs wrap up the road swing with a match at Oklahoma City University on Tuesday, Sept. 20. WTAMU returns home to host Northeastern State University and Missouri Southern State University on Friday and Sunday, Sept. 23 and 25, respectively.
