Complete Rendition of New Scoreboard in PDF Format
CANYON, Texas -- West Texas A&M University and the Canyon Independent School District are pleased to announce today (Jan. 26) that plans to build a new state-of-the-art scoreboard in Kimbrough Memorial Stadium are underway.
The new scoreboard will be one of the largest football scoreboards in the state of Texas, spanning 116 feet wide and rising 48 feet tall. The new board will include a 330-square foot video screen, a separate LED message board and a new sound system.
In addition to the scoreboard, a digital marquee will be installed outside the stadium to promote upcoming games and events.
Olen Williams, Inc. of Houston will oversee the project. The total cost will be approximately $650,000, which will be financed entirely through advertising agreements. No local tax or university dollars will be used.
In a second project, West Texas A&M will replace the existing chairback seats on the west side (home side) of the stadium with modern chair seating.
First priority to reserve these seats will be given to current Buffalo Club members, Corporate Partners and season ticket holders beginning in early February. The seats will be available to the general public beginning March 1.
Construction is expected to begin in late April and be completed by mid-August, in time for the season-opening games.
Kimbrough Memorial Stadium was built in 1959 and serves as the home for football and soccer for WTAMU, Canyon High School and Randall High School. The current scoreboard was installed in the late 1980's.
Ranking as the second-largest football facility in NCAA Division II with a seating capacity of 20,000, Kimbrough Memorial Stadium hosted an average of 13,089 fans for WTAMU football games this season, as the Buffaloes led NCAA-II in attendance. WTAMU also set a Lone Star Conference and a Kimbrough Memorial Stadium record with 22,993 fans for the Homecoming, 52-51 OT, win over border-rival Eastern New Mexico University in the Wagon Wheel game on Oct. 8, 2005. The Buffaloes finished the season 10-2 and won their first LSC Championship since 1986.
