Fender Scores Hat-Trick in 9-1 Route of ENMU

CANYON - The West Texas A&M University men's soccer team defeated Eastern New Mexico 9-1 in Canyon on Senior Day. WTAMU finishes their SSC season 10-4 and is currently in third place and Eastern New Mexico finishes with a 2-12 conference mark.
It was the second time this season that WTAMU has defeated ENMU as the Buffs' won on Sept. 6 3-0.
Saturday's match up was an offensive showcase as the Buffs tallied 9 goals and out shot ENMU 27-5, which included an 18-3 shots on goal advantage for WTAMU.
Freshmen midfielder Itamar Keinan scored first for the Buffs on a give and goal play with senior forward Josh Fender in the 16th minute. The goal was Keinan's second on the season and it gave WTAMU a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore defender Kenneth Christensen gave WTAMU a 2-0 lead as he blasted a shot from 15 yards out in the 21st minute. The goal was Christensen's fourth on the season. It wasn't long before Fender found the net as he put a penalty kick past the ENMU goalie in the 38th minute. The goal was Fender's team leading 16th and put WTAMU a 3-0 lead.
Freshemn midfielder Raul Rodriguez came in off the bench and found the net in the 43rd minute on a cross from sophomore defender Tomer Otor. The goal gave Rodriguez his seventh goal on the season and also gave WTAMU a 4-0 lead. The Buffs would quickly find the net again. Fender scored his 17th on the season as he found the net one minute later off a cross from sophomore defender Jesse Purvis which gave WTAMU their 5-0 lead going into the half.
The Buffs didn't lose a beat during the during half time as junior midfielder Ivan Vargas scored just one minute into the second half. Vargas took a ball off a deflected shot and put it past the ENMU goalie for his third goal on the season and gave WTAMU a 6-0 lead.
Eastern New Mexico closed the gap as the Greyhounds got a goal off a penalty kick in the 57th minute. Sophomore midfielder Rob Humphrey put it past the WTAMU goalie and closes the gap to 6-1.
Rodriguez found the net again for his second of the match and his eighth of the season in the 63rd minute. Rodriguez was hit on the run on a long pass from the back by Otor.
WTAMU finished their scoring on goals coming late in the game. Freshmen midfielder Tom Nutter got a goal in the 73rd as he stole a pass and snuck the ball past the right post to give WT a 8-1 lead. Fender completed the scoring and gave himself a hat-trick in the 74th minute on a header off a free kick from Tom Nutter. The goal gave Fender 18 goals on the season which is a personal best.
The match turned out to be a very physical one as ENMU was given 19 fouls and WTAMU received 9. Seven total yellow cards were given out as well as ENMU received five and WTAMU received two. The win gave WTAMU an 11-8 overall record on the season and WT finishes 6-1 at home. |
