In the first half, the Buffaloes struggled to find their offensive rhythm as the Buffs took four shots with three being on goal. In the 4th minute of the half, the Mustangs Craig Sutherland blasted a shot into the top corner of the goal from 20 yards out. Both teams continued to struggle against the 26 MPH wind as well as the dropping temperature.

Freddy Dominguez (JR, El Paso, Texas) would use the wind to his advantage after curving a shot from 30 yards out into the net. The rest of half would turn into an offensive battle with the Buffs taking 11 shots with five being on goal. The score would remain 1-1. I

In both overtime periods, neither team was able to land a shot in goal. The Buffs and the Mustangs combined for a total of just three shots during both overtime periods.
