DENVER, Colo. -- The 11th-ranked West Texas A&M University men's soccer team dropped a 5-3 decision at Metro State College Friday afternoon Auraria Field, after leading 2-0 in the first 11 minutes of the match.

The Buffs are now 7-2 on the year, as is Metro State.

WTAMU scored the first two goals of the match, as senior midfielder Omar Morales headed in a goal from sophomore midfielder Adam Villanueva in the third minute of action. In the 11th minute, senior forward Josh Fender headed in a loose ball from Villanueva to put WTAMU ahead, 2-0.

Metro charged back and tied the score by the 31st minute to knot the score at 2-all at the half.

The match was physical throughout, with the teams finishing the first half short players, as one Roadrunner and two Buff were assessed red cards, with WTAMU's freshman midfielder Nick Stevenson being sent off in the 27th minute. Freshman midfielder Jean Triger followed Stevenson to the bench in the 36th minute with his second yellow, which led to a red card.

Metro tacked on two goals in a span of just over a minute, at the 62nd minute and 63rd minute to go up, 4-2, and WTAMU freshman forward Raul Rodriguez was issued his second yellow card of the match, leading to his send off with a red card in the 66th minute.

Down to eight players, WTAMU mustered a goal in the 78th minute to close to 4-3 in the 78th minute on Morales' second goal of the match, off an assist from freshman midfielder Itamar Keinan.

Metro added the insurance goal in the 79th minute for the final scoring.

The Roadrunners outshot the Buffs, 26-15, as freshman goalkeeper Shawn Carr made seven saves.

 

 

WTAMU continues its road trip on Sunday, Oct. 2, at Pueblo, Colo., against Colorado State University-Pueblo at 3 p.m.

The Buffs return to Colorado next weekend, facing Colorado School of Mines on Oct. 7 and Fort Lewis College on Oct. 9. Both matches are hosted by Fort Lewis at Durango, Colo.
