The West Texas A&M University used a two-goals in two minute spurt to defeat Northeastern State University, 2-1, Friday afternoon in Southwest Soccer Conference action at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.

The Buffs bounced back from their first loss of the season and are now 6-1-0 overall and remain perfect in the SSC at 6-0-0. The Redmen are now 2-7-0 overall and 2-4-0 in SSC play, after dropping their third match in a row.

After a scoreless first half, WTAMU got on the board just 1:53 into the second half, as freshman defender Nick Stevenson hit senior forward Josh Fender with a pass, who then found freshman forward Raul Rodriguez in front of the net and Rodriguez burried the ball in the upper V.

Less than two minutes later, Stevenson gathered in a loose ball in traffic and went far post for his second goal of the season to put WTAMU ahead, 2-0, in the 49th minute.

NSU closed the gap to 2-1 in the 82nd minute as Socrates Melo took a free kick from 20 yards out at the top of the box and bent it around the WTAMU wall and into the net.

The Buff defense, anchored by sophomore defender Kenneth Christensen, held strong and steadfast and prevented the tying goal.

Freshman netminder Shawn Carr tallied three saves, in only yielding his second goal of the season.

WTAMU outshot NSU, 16-7, including 7-4 on goal.

The Buffs return to the turf of Kimbrough on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m., to take on Missouri Southern State University in another SSC contest.
