Buffs Upset, 1-0, Tuesday, Hours After Climbing To No. 11 In Poll
Sept. 20, 2005
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Just hours after the NSCAA/adidas Poll was released, announcing that the West Texas A&M University men's soccer team had climbed to No. 11, the Buffs were upset, 1-0, Tuesday afternoon in a heated non-conference contest by Oklahoma City University at OCU's Stars Field.
The Buffs had climbed from No. 21 in last week's poll to No. 11 this week after tromping then-No. 5 Midwestern State University, 3-0, Sunday at Wichita Falls, Texas, for WTAMU's first 5-0 start since 1999.
OCU, a traditional NAIA power, won its third-straight match and improves to 7-1.
The Stars got on the board early, as Jesse Faily snuck a shot just inside the post in the 10th minute, to be the first opponent to get a shot past WTAMU freshman goalkeeper Shawn Carr, whose shutout streak ended at 440:22.
Carr made two saves on OCU's three shots on goal, nine total, while Stars' keeper Dustin Nolan made two saves on WTAMU's two shots on goal, four total.
Tempers matched the temperature as there were a total of 26 fouls, with 21 whistled in the second half.
A total to nine yellow cards were issued (six on WTAMU, three on OCU) with four being issued at the end of the game (three on OCU, one on WTAMU).
The Buffs return home to Kimbrough Memorial Stadium to host a pair of Southwest Soccer Conference matches, opening on Friday, Sept. 23 at 3 p.m. against Northeastern State University. WTAMU then hosts Missouri Southern State University on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m.
