June 18, 2004

West Texas A&M University golfers senior Jimmy Jameson and junior Chris Washburn from the men's team and junior Meredith Easley were recently honored as Academic All-Americans by their respective golf associations.

Jameson and Washburn were named Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) 2004 Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar recipients, while Easley received second-team National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Academic All-American accolades. The GCAA governs men's golf, while NGCA oversees women's golf.

"We're very proud of the achievement of these three," WTAMU head golf coach Brad Borden said. "Our golf program has done some great things in our first three years as a program including winning golf tournaments as a team and having individuals winning golf tournaments, and advancing to NCAA Tournaments. However, I think that this achievement of having three Academic All-Americans is the greatest achievement we've had yet."

Junior Chris Washburn was named a GCAA Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar recipient.

Jameson and Washburn are just two of seven Lone Star Conference golfers named to the GCAA list of 35, while Easley is one of three LSC golfers among the 22 chosen for NGCA honors.

"I'm very proud of Meredith, Jimmy and Chris for exhibiting what is truly important in the realm of college athletics. All three of these student-athletes have made it a goal to be an Academic All-American and with the amount of time we spend practicing and on the road, along with the amount of time it takes to be successful in their course of study, they've had to be both diligent and disciplined personally to make that happen. They should be highly commended and I'm very proud of them and I'm very pleased to have their examples they are now setting for future Buffalo golfers to follow."

Junior Meredith Easley received second-team NGCA Academic All-American accolades.

Easley, an Amarillo, Texas native, has a 3.547 GPA as a social studies/social science major. She qualified to the NCAA-II West Regional for the second-consecutive year, finishing fourth this year, just missing a second-straight trip to the National Championships. Easley earned first-team All-LSC honors for the second year in a row, by finishing second at the LSC Championships last month. She also was named to the LSC All-Academic Team last month.

Jameson, a Clovis, N.M. native, has a 3.208 GPA as an accounting major. He finished tied for 14th at the NCAA-II South Central Regional, helping WTAMU to a tie for third-place in the Buffs' first-ever appearance at Regionals as a team. Jameson finished tied for 17th at the LSC Championships, helping WTAMU to sixth-place. Jameson was WTAMU's top golfer at two meets this spring, the University of Central Oklahoma/Kickingbird Classic and the Southwestern Oklahoma Invitational.

Washburn, a Midland, Texas native, has a 3.343 GPA as an accounting major. He finished 38th at the LSC Championships, helping WTAMU to a sixth-place finish and a spot in the NCAA-II South Central Regional as a team for the first time in school history. Washburn tied for 22nd-place at the Regional, as the Buffs finished tied for third in the team standings. He was also selected to the LSC Commissioner's Honor Roll.
