Borden Named WTAMU Head Men's Golf Coach
May 29, 2009
CANYON, Texas – Brad Borden has been named as head men’s golf coach at West Texas A&M. He replaces Jimmy Jameson, who served in an interim role this past season. Borden will be returning to the WTAMU athletic department, having served previously as head men’s and women’s golf coach from 2001-05. During that time, he led both the men’s and women’s programs to NCAA Regional berths, as well as developing four individuals who earned a total of six all-America, four all-Region and eight all-Lone Star Conference honors. He was selected as Panhandle Sports Hall of Fame Golf Coach of the Year in 2004-05. “I’m extremely pleased that Coach Borden is returning to West Texas A&M,” said WT Athletic Director Michael McBroom. “Brad is a very driven coach with high expectations and high morals. “During his previous stint as head men’s and women’s coach, he did an outstanding job with limited resources and the responsibilities of two teams,” McBroom continued. “With a singular focus on the men’s program and with additional scholarship resources available, I am confident that he will have our men’s program competing at a high level in a short time. All of the pieces of the puzzle are in place: a proven full-time coach, maximum scholarship dollars, local support from the golfing community and challenging practice facilities in La Paloma Golf Club and Tascosa Country Club.” Prior to his initial stint at WT, Borden served in the athletic department at Wayland Baptist from 1995-2001. He has also taught and coached at Pampa (Texas) High School from 1993-95 and Texas A&M from 1991-93. Over the past three years, Borden has taught mathematics at Amarillo College. Borden earned his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Texas A&M in 1991 and his Masters of Education from Wayland Baptist in 2005.
Over the past three years, the WT men’s golf program has seen a resurgence, through the providing of scholarships and other resources, which have allowed them to be able to compete on a regional and national level. In 2009, senior Geoff Phemister qualified as an individual for the NCAA regionals. For the first time in several years, the men’s golf program has the benefit of a full-time coach who is dedicated to improving student-athletes’ games and performances. The improvements to our men’s golf program would not be possible without the support of many, including Dr. O’Brien, the Buffalo Club and the Ryan Palmer Foundation in particular,” McBroom said. “Ryan’s commitment to WT Golf began several years ago, and his continued support of the program and that of the Foundation has been invaluable as we build our golf program. “I also want to publicly thank Jimmy Jameson for the job he did as interim coach this past spring. He took important time away from his new Golf, Etc. business and provided strong leadership and coaching to the men’s team. There is no question the players on the team responded to him. He and his wife Meredith (women’s coach) share a tremendous passion and knowledge of the game and I know he will remain involved in our program in the future.” |
