Buff Golfers Finish Third At ACU Intercollegiate

ABILENE, Texas -- The West Texas A&M University men's golf team fired the second-best round of the day to move up to finish third at the Abilene Christian University Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate at Diamondback Golf Club at Abilene, Texas.
WTAMU carded a combined 295 Tuesday to finish with a 594, finishing 12 strokes behind Cameron University, who fired the best combined score of the day, a 287, and finished with a 582. Host ACU shot 296 Tuesday and finished with a 588. The Buffs moved up from a tie for sixth after Monday's round to finish third.
Junior Paul Slaughter fired the second-best individual round of the day to move up from a five-way tie for 18th on Monday to finish in a four-way tie for 3rd. Slaughter shot a 1-under 70 to finish with a 2-over 144, two shot behind individual medalist, Travis Lovins from Cameron.
Freshman Geoff Phemister finished in a five-way logjam for 7th with a 145. Sophomore Jon Musser cared a 151, good for a tie for 23rd, while senior Thomas Maldonado was tied for 37th with a 154. Junior James Dillingham was tied for 53rd with a 158.
Playing as individuals, freshmen Joshua Rangel (157) and Jonathan Shelley (164), tied for 50th and 66th, respectively.
This was the coaching debut of new WTAMU men's golf coach Jeremy Hodges, who took over the program from Brad Borden, who resigned last month.
