Results

St. Mary's University leads the 11-team men's field after the first day of play at the West Texas A&M University Subway Invitational at La Paloma Country Club at Amarillo, Texas. STMU's Jamie Amoretti leads the field with a 9-under 133. Freshman Geoff Phemister is WTAMU's top golfer, sitting in a nine-way logjam for 11th-place, as the Buffs are in sixth as a team.

St. Mary's fired a combined 566 over the two 18-hole rounds and has a 16-stroke lead over Abilene Christian University (572). Cameron University follows (587), then Southwestern Oklahoma State University (598) in fourth and Western New Mexico University completes the top five with a 599. WTAMU is one stroke back in sixth (600), followed by Western New Mexico JV (602), East Central University (609), College of the Southwest (610) Southeastern Oklahoma State University is 10th with a 614 and Texas A&M University-Commerce rounds out the 11-team field (634).

Amoretti has a two-stroke lead over teammate Greg McAuley. Cian Daly of ACU is third (138), one stroke in front of Owen Mahaffey (139) from Cameron, while Eric Fox from Southwestern Oklahoma is fifth (142).

WTAMU is led by freshman Geoff Phemister, playing as an individual and is tied for 11th after firing a 147 (76-71), while sophomore Jon Musser is the top team player and is tied for 20th with a 148 (74-74).

The rest of the five-player team is rounded out by junior Paul Slaughter's 150, good for a tie for 26th, while senior Thomas Maldonado is 34th after carding a 152 (76-76). Junior Spud Dillingham is tied for 35th with a 153 (74-79) and junior Kent Neal is 50th after scoring a 158 (73-85).

 

 

WTAMU's other individuals were freshman Joshua Rangel, who fired an 81 in the first round, but then bounced back with the second-lowest score of the day by carding a 68 in round two, sitting in 25th-place with a 149. Freshman Jonathan Shelley is 63rd with a 172 (87-85).

Tuesday's final 18-hole round tees off at 8:30 a.m.

This is WTAMU's final tune-up for the Lone Star Conference Championships, April 17-18, at Trophy Club, Texas.
