CANYON, Texas - The quest for a third consecutive Lone Star Conference Championship begins on Saturday for the No. 14 West Texas A&M football team as the Buffs entertain Texas A&M-Commerce in a LSC Crossover match-up at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. WTAMU (2-0; 0-0 LSC) enters the game on a roll offensively, ranking second in the country in total offense by piling up an average of 592 yards per contest in the team's first two games. Junior quarterback Keith Null has been the unit's catalyst, ranking first nationally in passing yards per game (364 ygp). The Lampasas, Texas, native is coming off the best single game performance of his career as he completed 27-of-42 passes for 379 yards and six touchdowns last weekend in a road victory over Adams State. Joining Null to highlight the Buffs' offensive arsenal are junior receiver Charly Martin, who ranks fourth nationally in receiving yards per game (136 ypg) and has already hauled in four touchdown passes, and running back Keithon Flemming, who has posted back-to-back 100-yard rushing games to begin the season. Redshirt freshman A.J. Ruffins enjoyed a breakout performance in WTAMU's win over Adams State, catching six passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns. Flemming's fellow backfield mate, Wayne McKnight, just narrowly missed eclipsing the century mark in rushing yards against the Grizzles, finishing with 92 yards on eight carries. Defensively, the Buffs saw improvement from week one to week two, limiting Adams State to only 199 yards of total offense, a figure that included just 22 yards on the ground. WTAMU defenders have also shown the ability to come up with the big play when the team needs it, forcing four turnovers on the year. The victory over Adams State was also a milestone for WTAMU head coach Don Carthel who coached in his 100th NCAA game. Carthel's overall record entering the Texas A&M-Commerce game stands at 67-32-1 (.675) with an impressive 23-4 (.851) mark at the helm of the Buffalo football program. The Lions enter the weekend with a 1-2 record after starting the season with back-to-back losses to Pittsburg State and Ouchita Baptist before bouncing back with a 24-7 victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville last Saturday. Texas A&M-Commerce finished first in the LSC last season in total defense and this season's unit has been solid as well, entering the weekend ranked eighth in the league in total defense, limiting opponents to only 310.7 yards per game and just 170 thought the air. Head coach Scotty Conley is in his fourth year in Commerce, compiling a 15-18 record during his tenure at the school. Internet Broadcast
