Future Buffs Shine in Recent All-Star Games

CANYON, Texas – Several members of the West Texas A&M 2009 signing class recently participated in several football all-star games, with impressive results. Four Buff incoming freshmen signees participated in the Greenbelt Bowl, contested on June 13 at Fair Park Stadium in Childress, Texas. Brothers Clay and Clint Cockrell, receiver/defensive backs from Canadian (Texas) High, Tevin Mitchell, running back from Quanah (Texas) High, and Eric Needham, linebacker from Wellington (Texas) High saw action for the South squad. Mitchell Earned Offensive MVP honors after rushing 22 times for 149 yards and one TD, while Needham made one fumble recovery and Clint Cockrell caught a touchdown pass. Four future Buffs participated in the Lubbock ASCO Football Classic, played June 13 at Lowrey Field in Lubbock, Texas. Aarrhon Flores, running back/receiver from Floydada (Texas) High rushed 11 times for 81 yards and one TD, while catching two passes for an additional 35 yards and Lance Ratliff, receiver/kicker from Lubbock (Texas) Frenship High had five catches for 55 yards and one TD, while also booting a 39-yard field goal and a perfect five-of-five on PATs for the North squad. The South squad saw Darius Miller, running back from Midland (Texas) High returned a kickoff 104 yards for a TD and had 12 carries for 35 yards and two TDs and Adrian Pertile, defensive back from Midland Lee also saw action at defensive back. Brandon Boyd, linebacker from Aldine (Texas) Eisenhower was named Defensive MVP of the Houston Blue Chip Classic after recording 12 tackles and an interception, while Dexter Williams, defensive back from Aldine (Texas) Nimitz made six tackles and one interception. The Buffaloes report to camp August 4, with the 2009 season opener set for August 29, when WT hosts #1-ranked Grand Valley State. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.
