Four Buffs Expected to Get Shot with NFL Teams
April 28, 2008
CANYON, Texas - After leading West Texas A&M to its third straight Lone Star Conference Football Championship and a run in the NCAA Division II playoffs, four former Buffalo football standouts are expected to continue their football careers in the National Football League. The 2007 Buffs will go down in WT history as the team with the most wins in a season, and the team with the highest national ranking; finishing eighth in the American Football Coaches Association Top 25. Former Buffalo tight end Kolo Kapanui has agreed to a free agent contract with the Cleveland Browns. Kapanui, a Palolo, Hawaii native, was a major threat in the Buffs' high-powered passing attack, catching 39 passes for 481 yards and seven touchdowns last season. Kapanui was named a first team Daktronics All-American, along with garnering second team D2Football.com All-American honors. Steve Allen, meanwhile, is in discussions terms with three NFL franchises. Allen was a force on the defensive side of the ball, tallying 78 total tackles from his inside linebacker position while starting all 13 games for the Buffaloes. Allen was named defensive second team All-LSC after leading WT to a 12-1 record. Offensive tackle Pat Schwenke will attempt to break camp with the Pittsburg Steelers after leading the front line of the Buffalo air raid offense. Schwenke played a vital part in the Buffs clinching a third straight LSC title, garnering offensive second team honors from the LSC. Floyd Headen, another valuable member of the Buffalo offensive line is headed closer to home as the Tampa, Fla., native is expected to be attend camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Headen, spent the last two years protecting the blindside of WT quarterbacks as the team's left tackle.
This marks the third straight season that West Texas A&M has had players singed to NFL contracts. Last season quarterback Dalton Bell, now with the Green Bay Packers, was inked to a free agent deal by the Carolina Panthers a year after offensive linemen Pat McCoy and Dejuan Skinner were picked up by the Philadelphia Eagles organization. |
