CANYON, Texas - Coming on the heels of another 11-win, record-breaking season, West Texas A&M head football coach Don Carthel and his staff today announced its 2009 high school recruiting class. The 2009 recruiting class consists of 78 student-athletes who will join the program in the fall and help to make the Buffs a force on the Division II football scene for years to come.

“There was a tremendous amount of talent in Texas this year,” said Coach Carthel. “We feel very fortunate to have landed the amount of strong talent that we have. We will probably redshirt a large number of these young men, but the future is bright.

“With the style offense we employ, we are an attractive program to skill players,” Carthel added. “We signed several tall, fast receivers. Our quarterbacks are all athletic and can run. And, our incoming running backs may be the best we’ve seen. The running back position may just be the strongest position in this class. “Defensively, we had some holes to fill in our secondary from a year ago, and we feel like we’ve rung the bell with this class. We also signed some outstanding individual talent at both the defensive line and linebacker positions; guys who can run to the football and play with a lot of passion."

Broken down by position, the Buffaloes signed nine offensive linemen, seven quarterbacks, five running backs and 20 receivers. Defensively, they signed seven defensive linemen, 13 linebackers and 16 defensive backs, plus one kicker.

Torrence Allen

Wide Receiver • 6-1 • 170

Meridian, Texas (High)

Allen earned district Most Valuable Player honors under Coach Larry Moorhead at Meridian (Texas) HS. He also competed in track & field, winning the Class 1A State Championship in the triple jump, with an effort of 47-11. A three-sport athlete, Allen also earned varsity letters in basketball and is the son of Tony and Denise Allen.

 

Coach Carthel: "Allen was a multi-sport star in high school. He will begin his career at wide receiver, but could be a great collegiate safety, as well."

 

 

Emory Atterberry

Offensive Line • 6-5 • 245

Santa Fe, N.M. (St. Michaels)

Atterberry earned first-team all-State, all-Region and all-District 2-3A as an offensive and defensive lineman at Santa Fe (N.M.) St. Michaels HS. In 2008, he helped lead the Horsemen of Coach Joey Fernandez to an 8-5 record and a state playoff berth. In 2007, the Horesmen finished 12-2, advancing to the state playoffs. A three-sport athlete, Atterberry also lettered in basketball and track & field. He is a member of the National Spanish Honor Society and is the son of Martin and Kendra Atterberry.

 

Coach Carthel: "Atterberry has tremendous potential and is a very mature, well-coached athlete. He will be in the lineup soon and could become one of the top offensive linemen in the LSC."

 

 

Keith Baker

Defensive Back • 5-10 • 185

Humble, Texas (High)

An all-around athlete, Baker passed for over 1,200 yards and 13 TDs as a senior at Humble (Texas) HS, in addition to rushing for 450 yards and six TDs to earn first-team all-District 21-5A honors. As a junior in 2007, Baker accounted for over 1,100 passing yards, 50 rushing yards and 11 TDs in earning second-team all-district accolades for Coach Walt Beasley’s Wildcats. The son of Dreck and Lisa Baker, Baker has also earned varsity letters in basketball and track & field.

 

Coach Carthel: "Baker will move from the offensive side of the ball to defensive back. He was the starting free safety at Humble HS as a sophomore."

Nick Berry

Linebacker • 5-11 • 220

San Antonio, Texas (Roosevelt)

Berry earned first team all-District 26-5A and all-Area honors while at San Antonio (Texas) Roosevelt HS in 2008. He also earned all-district honors as a junior in 2007. Coached by Neal Lahue, Berry also earned varsity letters in wrestling and track & field. He earned an outstanding achievement award in English and is the son of Cheryl Beverly.

 

Coach Carthel: "Berry is a great addition to our inside linebacker position. He is a three-sport athlete and an outstanding wrestler at a Class 5A program."

 

 

Bryan Blackwell

Wide Receiver • 6-3 • 200

Frankston, Texas (High)

Blackwell was a first-team all-District 19-2A pick as a defensive back, and was a second-team all-district selection at quarterback, in addition to earning all-East Texas honorable mention recognition at both positions. He helped lead Coach Sam Well’s Indians to a 22-9 mark over the past three seasons, passing for over 2,200 yards and 21 Tds. Defensively, he recorded 12 career interceptions. A basketball and baseball letterwinner, Blackwell is the son of Shawn and Michelle Blackwell.

 

Coach Carthel: "Blackwell will move from quarterback to a receiver slot for us. He was a three-sport star at Frankston High and is a versatile athlete."

 

 

Brandon Boyd

Linebacker • 5-10 • 225

Houston, Texas (Eisenhower)

Boyd was the District 19-5A Defensive Most Valuable Player as a senior at Houston (Texas) Eisenhower HS. Coached by Ray Evans, he also earned Northeast Houston Defensive Player of the Year honors and was a second team all-Greater Houston pick. In addition to football, Boyd also lettered in track & field and is the son of Yvonne Boyd.

 

Coach Carthel: "Brandon reminds us a lot of Anthony Scott. He has really good upper body strength and is well built. He also ran a 10.8 in the 100 meters, which is tremendous for an athlete his size."

 

 

Jamal Burleson

Defensive Back • 5-10 • 170

Pflugerville, Texas (High)

Burleson was a first-team all-District 25-5A honoree while helping lead Pflugerville (Texas) HS to an 8-3 mark in 2008, and a bi-district playoff berth. In addition, he also earned TSWA all-State and all-Centex honors as a kick returner. The son of Alma Burleson and Hugh Albert, Burleson also earned varsity letters in track & field.

 

Coach Carthel: "Burleson has tremendous cover skills and will compete for playing time as a true freshman."

 

 

Kevin Butcher

Defensive Back • 5-9 • 170

Huntsville, Texas (High)

Butcher was named second team all-district as a receiver and as a defensive back under Coach Mitchell Lacy at Huntsville (Texas) HS. He also competed in track & field for the Panthers for three years.

Coach Carthel: Kevin is a very talented athlete with good speed.  He should develop into a good corner with the ability to play Nickel and Dime for during his carrer." 

 

Joshua Carr

Linebacker • 6-0 • 200

Kemp, Texas (High)

Carr was named Offensive Co-Most Valuable player and all-Henderson County Player of the Year as a senior at Kemp (Texas) HS. Under Coach Greg Anderson, he rushed for 1,450 yards and garnered 93 tackles and seven sacks for the Yellow Jackets in 2008. An Academic all-District 14-3A selection, Carr also lettered in track & field and basketball. He is the son of Tom and Kristie Carr.

 

Coach Carthel: "Carr was a great high school linebacker from the East Texas area. He has good speed and a nose for getting to the football."

 

 

Justin Carroll

Defensive Back • 6-0 • 175

Abilene, Texas (Abilene)

Carroll earned first team all-district honors as an outside linebacker and safety at Abilene (Texas) HS under Coach Steve Warren. As a senior, the team achieved a record of 10-1. Carroll also competed in baseball, earning all-district recognition. He is the son of Chester and Janet Carroll.

 

Coach Carthel: "Carroll is an excellent defensive player from Class 5A power Abilene High. He will be a safety while at WT."

 

 

Sergio Castillo

Kicker • 5-11 • 180

Mission, Texas (La Joya)

Castillo earned first team all-district honors as a placekicker and was a second team selection as a punter. He also lettered in baseball and soccer, while also playing in the band. Castillo is the son of Maria Cazares.

 

Coach Carthel: "Castillo had great stats as a punter and kicker. He was one of the best in the nation as ranked by several national kicking services."

 

 

Spencer Church

Quarterback • 6-2 • 225

Canyon, Texas (High)

Church earned all–District 3-4A honors after passing for 28 TDs and leading the Canyon (Texas) Eagles to a 6-4 mark and a playoff berth in 2008. As a junior in 2007, he was named District 5-3A Offensive MVP as well as all-Region after tossing 36 TDs and passing for 3,625 yards. Coached by Blake Bryant, Church is a member of the National Honor Society and was named Academic Class 4A all-State this past year. He is the son of Perry and Lisa Church.

 

Coach Carthel: "Spencer has been very successful and very comfortable in a similar high-powered offensive scheme at Canyon High School. He is a typical pocket passer and is very accurate with his throws."

 

 

Clayton Cockrell

Wide Receiver • 6-0 • 160

Higgins, Texas (Canadian)

As a running back and defensive back at Canadian (Texas) HS under Coach Kyle Lynch, Cockrell helped his team to back-to-back Texas Class 1A State Championships. He was selected to the all-district first team and also received academic all-district recognition. Cockrell also competed in basketball and track, qualifying for regionals in track. Cockrell is the son of Dan and Drucy Cockrell.

 

Coach Carthel: "Clayton was very successful over the past two seasons in an offense similar to what we run. He has excellent potential as an inside receiver."

 

 

Clint Cockrell

Wide Receiver • 5-10 • 160

Higgins, Texas (Canadian)

Cockrell played wide receiver at Canadian (Texas) HS under Coach Kyle Lynch and helped his team claim back-to-back Texas Class 1A State Championships. Cockrell also competed in basketball and track and is the son of Dan and Drucy Cockrell.

 

Coach Carthel: "Clint has very good experience operating in an offensive scheme very similar to what we employ at WT. He has the ability to succeed in our system."

 

 

Dakota Dill

Wide Receiver • 6-3 • 195

Spring, Texas (High)

Dill was named first team all-district wide receiver under Coach Sunny Karas at Spring (Texas) HS. Dill was also a three year letterman on the baseball diamond for the Lions and is the son of Elizabeth Dill.

 

 

Michael Drake

Linebacker • 6-2 • 195

Weatherford, Texas (Perrin)

Drake helped lead the Perrin (Texas) Pirates to an 8-3 record in 2008. Coached by Brad Hutton, he earned District 15-1A Offensive Most Valuable Player honors after rushing for over 1200 yards. He also holds the school record in the 100 meters and 200 meters and earned additional varsity letters in track & field, baseball and basketball. He is the son of Charles and Beverly Drake.

 

Coach Carthel: "Drake will transition to linebacker. He has excellent speed and should develop into an outstanding player."

 

 

Aarrhon Flores

Wide Receiver • 6-0 • 170

Floydada, Texas (High)

Flores rushed for over 1,000 yards in both his junior and senior seasons at Floydada (Texas) HS, earning all-District 2-2A and all-South Plains while playing for Coach Rusty Purser’s Whirlwinds. A multi-sport standout, Flores qualified for the State track & field meet, competing in the long jump, triple jump, 100 meters, 200 meters and the 800 meter relay in 2007. As a sophomore in 2006 he qualified for state in the 200 meters and the long jump. He is the Floydada HS Student Council president and is the son of Julio and Jeanette Flores.

 

Coach Carthel: "Aarrhon is probably the fastest receiver we have signed this year. He has the potential to be a big-play type receiver."

 

 

Blake Forester

Quarterback • 6-4 • 195

New Braunfels, Texas (High)

Forester was a 2008 honorable mention all-district honoree as a senior at New Braunfels (Texas) HS, while also earning varsity monograms in basketball and track & field. The son of Scott and Sherry Forester, he also was named academic all-district.

 

Coach Carthel: "Blake is an excellent athlete, has tremendous arm strength and is an outstanding student, as well. He should be a good fit in our offensive scheme."

 

 

Kenneth Garrett

Defensive Line • 6-4 • 260

Oklahoma City, Okla. (Crooked Oak)

Garrett has the versatility to play a variety of positions along the defensive line. As a senior at Oklahoma City (Okla.) Crooked Oak HS, he played defensive tackle, end, linebacker, as well as offensive tackle for Coach Daryl Williamson. A basketball , track & field, wrestling and powerlifting letterwinner, Garrett is the son of Anita Garrett.

 

Coach Carthel: "Garrett might just be the gem of this recruiting class. He was one of the most dominant players in the State of Oklahoma and has great size and speed for an interior lineman."

 

 

Kendrick Geyen

Defensive Back • 6-1 • 190

Cibolo, Texas (Steele)

Geyen earned all-district honors as a junior and a senior under Coach Mike Jinks at Cibolo Steele (Texas) HS. He also competed in track & field, lettering for four years. On the field, Geyen led the Knights to district championships in 2007and 2008.

 

Coach Carthel: "Kendrick is a tremendous athlete. He could play as a freshman and should develop into an impact player for us."

 

 

Mark Glawe

Quarterback • 6-3 • 220

Amarillo, Texas (Randall)

As a quarterback at Amarillo (Texas) Randall HS under Coach Ken Plunk, Glawe led his team to an 8-3 record and a second-consecutive district championship. He was selected as a team captain as a junior and senior and was the October Chamber of Commerce Athlete of the Month. A multi-sport athlete, Glawe competed in basketball, baseball, and powerlifting and was a Superintendant scholar and a member of the National Honor Society. Glawe is the son of Mark and Amber Glawe.

 

Coach Carthel: "Mark has good height and arm strength. He displayed his leadership abilities by guiding his high school program to a banner season."

 

 

Daric Gorton

Offensive Line • 6-4 • 250

China Spring, Texas (High)

Gorton earned first-team all District 7-3A honors as a senior at China Spring (Texas) HS. An honorable mention all state selection while playing for Coach Mark Bell, Gorton also earned all-academic honors, as well. A basketball and track & field letterwinner, Gorton is the son of Randal and Debra Gorton.

 

Coach Carthel: "Daric has tons of potential as an athletic center. He played through a knee injury this past season."

 

 

Tyler Grabarkewitz

Quarterback • 6-3 • 185

Austin, Texas (Westwood)

Grabarkewitz passed for 1,850 yards and 16 TDs, while also rushing for 450 yards and nine TDs as a senior for Coach Anthony Wood’s Austin (Texas) Westwood Warriors. The son of Sherri West and Teddy Grabarkewitz, Tyler also earned District 16-5A honorable mention honors.

 

Coach Carthel: "Grabarkewitz showed great signs in a very good Austin-area program. He led his team to several key wins over his career and is a very strong student."

 

 

Ryan Grametbaur

Defensive Back • 6-1 • 195

New Braunfels, Texas (High)

Grametbaur logged 75 tackles while helping lead the New Braunfels (Texas) Unicorns to a 6-4 mark in 2008. In addition, he registered five tackles for lost yardage and five interceptions to earn all-District 26-5A and all-State honors while playing for Coach Chuck Caniford. As a junior, he totaled 171 tackles and two quarterback sacks. Grametbaur is the son of Stacey and Lauri Grametbaur.

 

Coach Carthel: "Ryan was an all-State safety at Class 5A New Braunfels. He has tremendous size and strength, and graduated from high school this past December."

 

 

Cameron Graves

Offensive Line • 6-2 • 260

Euless, Texas (Trinity)

Graves earned first team all-district honors under Coach Steve Lineweaver at Euless Trinity (Texas) HS. He was named first team All-Tarrant County for the Trojans while lettering in football for two seasons, also being named academic all-state.

 

Coach Carthel: "Cameron comes in as a very athletic offensive lineman and played extremelyl well for on of the best Class 5-A programs in the state."

 

 

Joshua Graves

Wide Receiver • 6-3 • 205

Stephenville, Texas (High)

Graves was a first-team all-State, all-Big Country and all-District selection as a wide receiver at Stephenville (Texas) HS. Playing for Coach Joe Gillespie, Graves helped guide the Yellowjackets to an 11-4 record in 2008. Graves earned academic all-district honors, as well as lettering in track & field and basketball. He is the son of Brad Graves and Kay Wesson.

 

Coach Carthel: "Joshua should be a strong candidate for playing time as a tight end. He helped lead the Yellow Jackets to a great season and was a first team all-State pick. He has the ability to be a true tight end."

 

 

Luke Halpin

Quarterback • 5-11 • 180

Mesquite, Texas (High)

Halpin earned first team all-district and district Most Valuable Player honors as a senior at Mesquite (Texas) HS, after passing for 2,004 yards and 17 TDs while throwing just two interceptions. A team captain for the Skeeters, he was a second team all-district pick in 2007 and was named district Newcomer of the Year in 2006. A golf and baseball lettermen, as well, he is a member of the school’s honor roll and is the son of Steve and Mary Ann Halpin.

 Trevor Hammargren

Wide Receiver • 6-0 • 160

Aztec, N.M. (High)

Hammargren had a prolific career at Aztec (N.M.) HS, catching 69 passes for 1,191 yards and 22 TDs. Defensively, he registered 72 tackles and three interceptions. For his efforts he was named the 2008 District 1-4A Player of the Year, earned first-team all-District and all-District Academic honors, as well as earning first-team all-State on both offense as well as defense after helping guide the Tigers to a 12-1 record and a state runner-up finish. The son of Alan and Lorry Hammargren, Trevor earned the Tiger Award for posting the highest grade point average on the team, with a 4.25. Hammargren also earned varsity letters in track & field while at Aztec HS.

 

Coach Carthel: "Trevor had a tremendous season, posting big receiving numbers this past season in an offense similar to ours."

 

 

Jacob Hanna

Linebacker • 6-1 • 215

Lumberton, Texas (High)

Hanna was a two-time all-State selection as a defensive lineman at Lumberton (Texas) HS, as well as earning District 22-4A offensive Most Valuable Player honors as a running back. Playing for Coach Alvin Credeur rushed for 2,325 career yards on 290 carries and scored 34 touchdowns, registered 143 tackles (with 56 coming behind the line) and 19 sacks, and posted a 41.35 punting average. He also lettered in track & field, soccer, powerlifting and golf at Lumberton High and is the son of Justin and Suzy Hanna.

 

Coach Carthel: "Jacob is a very versatile athlete. He was an excellent high school punter, and he showed excellent speed in the 100 meters in track. He also displayed explosiveness as a shot putter."

 

 

Ketrich Harmon

Running Back • 6-2 • 255

Frankston, Texas (High)

Harmon earned team Most Valuable Player honors, as well as earning all-State and first team all-District 19-2A honors as a running back at Frankston (Texas) HS. He also earned second team all-district honors as a defensive end. During his career with the Indians, he rushed for 3,616 yards, 40 TDs offensively, while defensively, he was involved in 178 tackles and 57 quarterback sacks. As a junior in 2007, he earned all-State honors and was district MVP at running back. Harmon is the son of La’Marcus Harmon and Sandrew Ellis.

 

Coach Carthel: "Harmon will remind WT fans of the great Dewayne Miles. He could be in the lineup this fall as a true freshman. He has extraordinary strength and tremendous speed. Ketrich is definitely one of the best overall athletes we have signed in several years."

 

 

Cole Hicks

Wide Receiver • 6-1 • 180

Bandera, Texas (High)

Hicks was a first-team all-district and all-area selection the past two seasons at Bandera (Texas) HS. As a senior, he caught 51 receptions for over 900 yards and 17 TDs. Coached by Larry Prince, he was also in on 94 tackles and six interceptions as a defensive back. As a junior in 2007, he caught 48 passes for 890 yards and 14 TDs, while making five interceptions. A regional qualifier in the 400 meters and 4x400 meter relay in track & field, Hicks is the son of Greg and Nancy Hicks.

 

Coach Carthel: "We’re really excited to have Cole join us. He was a highly-ranked wide receiver and was really high on our board."

 

 

Chris Hight

Wide Receiver • 6-2 • 195

Dallas, Texas (Madison)

Playing for coach Ronald Johnson, Hight earned first team all-District 11-3A honors as a junior in 2007. A member of the National Honor Society and an Honor Roll student, Hight is the son of Claude and Angela Hight.

 

Coach Carthel: "Hight has the knack for making big plays. He should fit well in the outside receiver position. He is an outstanding student, as well."

 

 

Ronnie Hodges

Linebacker • 6-0 • 220

Humble, Texas (High)

Hodges was named 2008 Defensive Lineman of the Year while playing at Humble (Texas) HS. He also was a first-team all-district selection at defensive end for the Wildcats. Hodges is the son of Ronnie and Beverly Hodges.

 

Coach Carthel: "Ronnie is an aggressive tackler and has good, rangy, speed. He is the type of defender that offenses have to keep an eye on. He has a nose for the ball and makes things happen."

 

 

Cade Hollandsworth

Linebacker • 6-1 • 275

Big Spring, Texas (High)

This linebacking prospect was a first-team all-District 4-4A and honorable mention all-State pick, as well as being named District Defensive Most Valuable Player in 2007. An honorable mention all-district choice in 2008, he helped guide Coach Phillip Ritchey’s Steer’s to an 8-5 record and a berth in the 2008 state playoffs. A two-sport standout, Hollandsworth also lettered in baseball. He is the son of Alan and Linda Hollandsworth.

 

Coach Carthel: "Hollandsworth was an outstanding inside linebacker for Big Spring High. He also played some defensive end and has great leverage and strength."

 

 

Kaleb Horsford

Quarterback • 6-4 • 185

Stratford, Texas (High)

Horsford was a member of the Stratford (Texas) Elks Class 1A State championships in both 2008 and 2005. Playing for Coach Eddie Metcalfe, Horsford also led the Elks to a semi-finalist berth in 2007. Solid in the classroom, he was a two-time Academic all-District selection, earning the honors in 2007 and 2008. He is the son of Lance and Dinah Horsford.

 

Coach Carthel: "Horsford led Stratford to a stat championship this past season. He is a very intelligent athlete that could play numerous positions. He comes from a ‘coaching family’ and is a well-rounded student-athlete that has had success in several sports."

 

 

Paris Johnson

Defensive Back • 5-10 • 165

San Antonio, Texas (Southwest)

Johnson helped guide the San Antonio (Texas) Southwest Dragons to a 9-3 mark in 2008. A three-sport letterwinner, he excelled in basketball and track & field, in addition to football. He is the son of Elvis and Lynell Mack.

 

Coach Carthel: "Paris is one of the most exciting players we’ve seen, on film, in a long time. He makes things happen whenever he touches the ball. He scored eight times on defense in 2008, which tells he gets his hands on the ball a lot."

 

 

Micah Kemp

Offensive Line • 6-5 • 305

Ennis, Texas (High)

This sizeable offensive line prospect was a three-time all-District 16-4A selection while at Ennis (Texas) HS. He was the recipient of the Lions’ Offensive Line Award, as well as the team’s Leadership Award after helping lead coach Sam Harrell’s squad to an 11-2 record and a post-season playoff run. Micah is the son of Victor and Shannon Kemp.

 

Coach Carthel: "Kemp is an outstanding powerlifter with great size that should help in gaining a spot on the offensive line."

 

 

Tarin Lee

Defensive Back • 5-11 • 180

San Antonio, Texas (Warren)

Lee earned first-team all-district honors in 2008 and honorable mention all-area honors after helping lead the San Antonio (Texas) Warren Warriors to a 9-3 mark. A three-year letterwinner, Lee also earned varsity letters in track & field. He is the son of James and Tracy Lee.

 

Coach Carthel: "Tarin’s work ethic could lead him to an outstanding career in the secondary at WT."

 

 

Jonathon Lindsey

Linebacker • 6-2 • 220

Strawn, Texas (High)

Lindsey was named the Texas High School Six-Man Player of the Year under Coach Dewaine Lee at Strawn (Texas) HS. He also competed in track & field, winning the Class 1A State Championship in the Discus. Lindsey will also be competing in track & field at West Texas A&M, he is the son of David and Pam Lindsey.

 

Coach Carthel: "Jonathon will be another two-sport star for WT. It’ll be fun to watch him make the switch to 11-man football."

 

  

Zamir Linton

Defensive Back • 6-0 • 190

Big Spring, Texas (High)

Linton was a first team all-District 4-4A cornerback pick in 2008 for Coach Phillip Ritchey’s Big Spring (Texas) HS squad. In addition to his success on the gridiron, he also took district first-place honors in the 4x100 and 4x200 meter relays in track & field. A member of Who’s Who, Linton is the son of Floyd Linton and Winnie Parker.

 

Coach Carthel: "Linton excelled in three sports at Big Spring High. He has an intimidating presence in the secondary."

 

 

James Maddox

Offensive Line • 6-5 • 245

San Antonio, Texas (Stevens)

Maddox was a second team all-District 28-5A selection as a senior at San Antonio (Texas) J.P. Stevens HS. Coached by Lee Bridges, he played on both sides of the line to help guide the Falcons to a 7-4 mark in 2008. A two-sport athlete, Maddox also lettered in baseball and is the son of Jay and Lisa Maddox.

 

Coach Carthel: "Maddox brings size and strength to this offensive line class."

 

 

Thaddeus McCray

Defensive Back • 5-8 • 175

Beaumont, Texas (Ozen)

McCray showed his abilities in both the defensive secondary, as well as being a return specialist for Coach Ishan Rison’s Beaumont (Texas) HS Panthers. In addition to football, McCray earned varsity letters in both track & field, as well as powerlifting. He is the son of James and Linda McCray.

McSheffery was a member of Sulphur Springs’ 2008 Class 4A State championship team, as well as being a first team all-district and AP all-State honorable selection as a defensive back. Member of the National Honor Society and a first-team Academic all-district selection, McSheffery is the son of John and Laura McSheffery.

Darius Miller

Miller was an all-State and all-District 2-5A selection at running back for Midland (Texas) HS in 2008, rushing for 1,750 yards, grabbing over 500 receiving yards and scoring 26 touchdowns. Playing for Coach Craig Yenzer, he was also named team MVP for the Bulldogs. Miller is the son of Helen King.

 

Coach Carthel: "Miller has excellent speed and jumping ability. He has the power to be an all0around athlete in the backfield, as well as being a strong student in the classroom."

 

 

Tevin Mitchell

Mitchell was a first-team all-state selection as a senior at Quanah (Texas) HS. Coached by James McDaniel, he rushed for 2,055 in 2008 to earn Offensive Most Valuable Player honors. He gained all-state honorable mention honors as a junior in 2007 (when he carried the ball for over 2,700 yards). A letterwinner in track & field and basketball, Mitchell is the son of John Mitchell.

Dwight Morrison

Dallas, Texas (Lincoln)

Morrison was a two-time second team all-District 12-4A selection wile at Dallas (Texas) Lincoln HS. Playing for Coach Tyson Garner’s Tigers, Morrison earned Newcomer of the Year honors as a sophomore in 2006. A regional finalist in track & field, he also was a member of the school’s honor roll for three-consecutive years. Morrison is the son of Dwight Morrison and Nikki Tadlock.

 

Coach Carthel: "Morrison may lack size, but he has a big heart. He will be a fan favorite."

 

 

Eric Needham

Wellington, Texas (High)

Needham earned 2008 all-State honors as a linebacker, and all-district accolades as both a linebacker and running back. A member of the Amarillo Globe-News Super Team, he was coached by Wade Williams and helped lead the Wellington (Texas) Skyrockets to an 11-1 season and a bi-district championship. Needham is the son of Craig and Dee Dee Needham.

 

Coach Carthel: "Eric is a tremendous local talent that many felt was the top linebacker in the Panhandle."

 

 

Chris Olson

Flower Mound, Texas (Marcus)

Olson was a captain and earned all-District 6-5A honors this past season at Flower Mound (Texas) Marcus HS. He played both defensive end and tight end for Coach Bryan Erwin’s Marauders, while also lettering in track & field. A National Honor Society member as well as being a member of the English honor society, Olson is the son of Keith and Rhonda Olson.

 

Coach Carthel: "Olson committed early to the Buffaloes and has a chance to make an impact early in his career."

 

 

Derrick Osborn

Wide Receiver • 5-11 • 190

Mesquite, Texas (Naaman Forest)

Osborn earned first team all-district honors, as well as being named Offensive MVP while helping lead the Naaman Forest Rangers to an 11-2 district championship in 2008. He also earned sophomore of the year accolades while playing under Coach Bill Patterson. A multi-sport athlete, Osborn also lettered in track & field and basketball. He is the son of Derrick Osborn and Tara Shoemaker.

 

Coach Carthel: "Derrick is an outstanding athlete for one of the top programs in the Metroplex. He made some great plays as a quarterback and should be able to make the adjustment to an inside receiver position."

 

 

Sidney Parker

Wide Receiver • 5-11 • 170

Big Spring, Texas (High)

Parker earned all-Big Country, all-Region and all-District 4-4A honors this past season at Big Spring (Texas) HS. He recorded 21 catches for 485 yards and five TDs as a receiver for Coach Phillip Ritchey. A standout on the track, as well, he was a regional qualifier for the Tigers in the 400 meters, 800 meters, triple jump and mile relay. Parker is the son of Sidney and Shirley Parker.

 

Coach Carthel: "Parker performed at a high level as a productive receiver at Big Spring. He was a district champ in the 800 meters and was a strong student, as well."

 

 

Jimmy Lee Randle

LaPorte, Texas (LaPorte)

Randle earned first team all-district honors as a wide receiver at LaPorte (Texas) HS under Coach Jeff LaReau. He totaled the most receptions in a season with 54 catches for 730 yards and four touchdowns. A multi-sport athlete, Randle is a two-year letterwinner in basketball and track, and is the son of Sherry Thomas.

 

Coach Carthel: "Randle is a great threat on the outside, with good speed, height and jumping ability. He should develop into the type of receiver we expect at WT."

 

 

Jed Rankin

Linebacker • 5-10 • 200

Canadian, Texas (High)

A two-time all-State selection, Ranking was earned Most Valuable Defensive Player honors for the Canadian (Texas) HS Class 1A State Championship team. An all-District 1-1A honoree, Rankin also earned all-District honors as an actor in Drama. He is the son of Bo and Teresa Rankin.

 

Coach Carthel: "Jed was a Class 1-A Defensive Player of the Year and has a nose for the football. He is a very sure tackler and should develop with the addition of size and strength."

 

 

Lance Ratliff

Wide Receiver • 6-4 • 175

Lubbock, Texas (Frenship)

Ratliff played wide receiver, defensive back and placekicker while at Lubbock (Texas) Frenship HS. A 2008 all-District 4-4A selection, he also earned all-City and all-South Plains recognition as both a receiver and placekicker. He logged 36 catches, 13 TDs, booted a long field goal of 49 yards and had a 102 yard kickoff return while playing for Coach Brad Davis. An Academic all-District pick in football, basketball, track & field and baseball, Ratliff is the son of Aaron and Dan Ratliff.

 

Coach Carthel: "Ratliff is probably the most versatile athlete we sign this year. He is an outstanding receiver and excellent free safety, as well as being one of the better punters and placekickers in the South Plains. He was highly-recruited by several schools and is one of the better athletes in Texas."

 

 

Justin Reeves

Arlington, Texas (Seguin)

Reeves earned Defensive Player of the Year honors as a defensive back for the Arlington (Texas) Seguin Cougars. Coached by Carlos Lynn, he also excelled in track & field and wrestling. Reeves is the son of Dwayne and Mattie Tate.

 

Coach Carthel: "Reeves has the opportunity to be a state champion in the hurdles this Spring. He will be a two-sport athlete at WT."

 

 

Alex Reyes

Canadian, Texas (High)

Reyes earned second team Class 1A all-State honors as a wide receiver and linebacker for Coach Kyle Lynch’s Canadian (Texas) HS Class 1A State Championship. He also was an all-Districk 1-1A selection at both receiver and defensive back. A three-sport letterwinner, Reyes also competed in basketball and track & field. An Academic all-District 1-1A honoree, he is the son of Ricardo and Julia Reyes.

 

Coach Carthel: "Alex is a very talented receiver with good numbers and numerous big plays while helping Canadian HS to back-to-back championships."

 

 

Danny Reyes

Reyes earned first team Class 1A all-State honors as a wide receiver and linebacker for Coach Kyle Lynch’s Canadian (Texas) HS Class 1A State Championship team. A three-sport letterman, Reyes also earned varsity letters in track & field and basketball. He is the son of Ricardo and Julia Reyes.

 

Coach Carthel: "Danny should develop into a solid player for WT. He had some great games during Canadian High’s run through the state playoffs."

 

 

Charles Rigsby

Defensive Line • 6-0 • 280

Texarkana, Texas (Liberty-Eylau)

Rigsby played tight end, nose guard, and defensive end while at Texarkana (Texas) Liberty-Eylau HS under Coach Pat Brady. He led the team in tackles for loss and tallied a career total of 160 tackles in four seasons. Rigsby received all-district honorable mention recognition and was a team captain. He also competed in track and powerlifting, placing ninth in the state in powerlifting. Rigsby is the son of Charlotte Rigsby.

 

Coach Carthel: "Rigsby turned down some Division I offers to join our football program, and we’re glad he did."

 

 

Hayden Rybiski

Linebacker • 6-0 • 205

Texarkana, Texas (Pleasant Grove)

Rybiski was an honorable mention all-State honoree in 2008 while playing for Texarkana (Texas) Pleasant Grove HS. He helped lead the Hawks to a 9-3 record in 2008 and a berth in the state playoffs. A two-teim all-East Texas and all District 16-3A honoree, he was coached by Kevin Davis and is the son of Barry and Christy Rybiski.

 

Coach Carthel: "Hayden was the first commitment we received for the 2009 class. It should be fun watching him develop as a collegiate player."

 

 

Valmaali Sapoi

Linebacker • 6-3 • 240

Euless, Texas (Trinity)

Sapoi lead the Trojans to a 13-1 record as a senior under Coach Steve Lineweaver at Euless Trinity (Texas) HS. In his five games as a senior, Sapoi tallied 45 tackles and four sacks. He lettered in football for two seasons and he is the son of Naitini Keili Sapoi.

 

Coach Carthel: "Via mad all kinds of plays last year at Trinity HS. Had he not hurt his knee, I doubt that we would have been able to get him."

 

 

 Brennan Shay

Wide Receiver • 6-2 • 195

Farmington, N.M. (Piedra Vista)

Shay earned first team all-district honors in both his junior and senior seasons as a quarterback and wide receiver at Piedra Vista HS under Coach Jared Howell. In his senior season, he tallied 1200 rushing yards and 1110 passing yards. As a sophomore, Shay received second team all-district recognition. A multi-sport athlete, Shay lettered in basketball, track, and baseball and was listed on the honor roll. He earned first team all-district and first team all-state recognition in baseball. Shay is the son of June and Brian Shay.

 

Coach Carthel: "Shay is an outstanding receiver with good speed and ability. He should flourish in our offense and is a solid student, as well."

 

 

Sam Scholl

Bryan, Texas (High)

Scholl saw action at several positions on the Bryan (Texas) HS offensive line in 2008. A two-sport athlete, he also participates in the shot in track & field and is the son of Molly Marchman.

 

Coach Carthel: "Scholl is a very tough, well–coached player from a solid Bryan HS program. He has great work ethic and should develop quickly. He was one of the top O-line prospects in the Centex region."

 

 

Tony Scott

Defensive Line • 6-0 • 270

Dallas, Texas (Duncanville)

Scott earned first team all-District 7-5A honors for the Duncanville (Texas) HS Panthers in 2008. He also served as a team captain for Coach Jeff Dikus. A two-sport letterman, Scott also competed in the discus in track & field and is the son of Samantha Gray.

 

Coach Carthel: "Tony has tremendous speed and power. He has squatted over 725 pounds. If he was just a little taller, he’d be playing Division I football."

 

 

John Simpson

Wide Receiver • 6-4 • 185

Lancaster, Texas (Lancaster)

As a wide receiver and corner back under Coach Andrew Jackson at Lancaster (Texas) HS, Simpson helped lead his team to a District Championship. He is a multi-sport athlete, competing in soccer, track, and baseball. Simpson is the son of Patricia and Dexter Simpson.

 

Coach Carthel: "Simpson is an excellent receiver from a team that was loaded at that position this past season. He will provide a great outside target for our quarterbacks. He is strong in the classroom, as well."

 

 

Nevin Sneed

Defensive Back • 5-11 • 185

Katy, Texas (Taylor)

Sneed was named Defensive Most Valuable Player for his performance as a senior at Katy (Texas) Taylor HS. He played a multitude of positions under Coach Flint Risien, including receiver, linebacker and defensive back, as the Mustangs advanced to the Region Semifinals with a record of 8-5. Sneed also lettered in both basketball and lacrosse and is the son of Cernal and Valerie Sneed.

 

Coach Carthel: "Sneed is a really good defensive back prospect. He is athletic and has rangy ability that makes him a promising safety prospect."

 

 

William Thornton

Linebacker • 6-2 • 210

San Antonio, Texas (Judson)

Thornton was a second team all-City selection following an 8-2 District 27-5A championship year at San Antonio (Texas) Judson HS. He played nose guard, linebacker and defensive end for Coach Jim Rackley, while also participating in track & field and wrestling. Thornton is the son of Padrica Pritchard.

 

Coach Carthel: "Thornton played nose guard at Class 5A power Converse Judson. We’ve yet to see anyone knock him off his feet on film."

 

 

Jock Tilghman

Running Back • 5-7 • 175

San Antonio, Texas (Clark)

Tilghman was named the San Antonio Offensive Player of the Year under Coach Lloyd Alexander at San Antonio Clark (Texas) HS. He was named first team all-state as well as the Dave Campbell’s Texas 5A Offensive Player of the Year. Tilghman also lettered in track for the Cougars and is the son of Bridgette Tilghman.

 

 

Sean Tillotson

Defensive Line • 6-2 • 245

Arlington, Texas (Mansfield Summit)

A first-team all-District standout for Mansfield (Texas) Summit HS, Tillotson played at defensive end and linebacker for Coach Kyle Geller’s Jaguars. As a senior, he registered 107 tackles, 21 TFLs and six sacks. His junior season saw him log 96 tackles, 23 TFLs and three sacks. A three-sport performer, Tillotson also lettered in track & field and baseball. He is the son of Bill and Christina Tillotson.

 

Coach Carthel: "Sean shows a lot of promise in an already strong defensive line class. He has great pass rushing ability and is always around the quarterback."

 

 

Dustin Vaughan

Quarterback • 6-5 • 220

Corpus Christi, Texas (Calallen)

Vaughn earned first team all-District 31-4A honors as both a quarterback as well as a punter. He also earned all-Metro and all-South Texas honors with Coach Phil Danaher. An all-State academic selection, he graduated in the top 10 of his class and was a member of the National Honor Society. Vaughn also played basketball and baseball in high school, being named a basketball newcomer of the year and helping his baseball team to a class 4A state championship. He is the son of Scott and Gina Vaughn.

 

Coach Carthel: "Vaughan has all the tools to be another record-setting quarterback at WT. He competed in three sports at a very competitive 5-A program and is a top student at a very competitive school."

 

 

Kyle Voss

Linebacker • 5-11 • 220

Belton, Texas (Belton)

As a multi-position player under Coach Rodney Southern, Voss was named defensive player of the year and earned first team all-district honors as a senior. He recorded 365 career tackles. Voss also earned first team all-district recognition as a sophomore and a junior and was newcomer of the year as a sophomore. A multi-sport athlete, Voss also earned letters in track & field, basketball, and powerlifting. He is the son of Karl and Trudi Voss.

 

Coach Carthel: "Kyle is the most intense person in this class. He will no doubt be fun to coach."

 

 

Marc Waller

Groesbeck, Texas (High)

This sizeable offensive lineman was a second-team all-District 19-3A selection this past season at Groesbeck (Texas) HS. While playing for the Goats, he was coached by Stephen Burrow. Waller is the son of Don and Susan Waller.

 

Coach Carthel: "Waller is a huge talent. We look for him to develop into an impact player."

 

 

Chad Ward

Defensive Back • 6-1 • 185

Waco, Texas (La Vega)

As a running back/defensive back at Waco (Texas) La Vega HS, Ward rushed for over 900 yards and 16 TDs during 2008. Coached by Willie Williams, he was named Texas Prep second team on defense, as well as being selected to the Centex honor roll. Ward also lettered in track & field, advancing to the state meet where he finished second in the 4x100 and 4th in the 4x200 relays. He is the son of Earnest and Alecia Ward.

 

Coach Carthel: "Chad switched his commitment from the Air Force Academy to WT, and we are thrilled! He has the ability to play as a freshman and can play any position in the secondary. He was an early graduate from Waco La Vega."

 

 

Craig Watts

Offensive Line • 6-4 • 285

Killeen, Texas (High)

Watts earned all-District 25-4A honorable mention honors in 2008 at Killeen (Texas) HS. A member oft eh 2008 Super Centex team, he helped lead Coach Sam Jones’ Kangaroos to a 9-5 mark and a berth in the State quarterfinals. A multi-sport letterwinner, Watts also competed in track & field and wrestling and is the son of Craig and Roselyn Watts.

 

Coach Carthel: "Watts is an outstanding prospect with lots of raw talent. He could be very successful as an offensive lineman, as he has shown he has the athleticism to block in our style of offensive scheme."

 

 

Shaun Wesley

Offensive Tackle • 6-7 • 240

Canyon, Texas (Canyon)

Wesley played offensive tackle and defensive end while at Canyon (Texas) HS. He was an all-District 3-4A selection in both his junior and senior years under Coach Bill Bryant. An Academic all-State pick in football, Wesley was a superintendent scholar and a two-year member of the National Honor Society. He was a three-year letterwinner in track & field, placing first at district and advancing as a regional qualifier. Wesley is the son of Daryl Wesley and LeeAnn Shaw.

 

Coach Carthel: "Wesley is a tall, athletic, intelligent lineman with lots of energy and talent. He showed power and explosiveness a year ago in the shot put, throwing over 51 feet. He should develop into a solid tackle in our offense."

 

 

Chris West

Houston, Texas (Mayde Creek)

West earned second team all-District17-5A honors as a running back, wide receiver, and kick returner at Houston (Texas) Mayde Creek HS under Coach Lance Carter. He helped lead his team on a second-consecutive playoff run after a 10-year playoff drought. A track & field letterwinner, West is the son of Derek and Rhoda West.

 

Coach Carthel: "West is a tremendous athlete with skills as a blocker, runner and receiver out of the backfield. He has all the tools to be an impact player for us. Both of his parents were outstanding athletes, as well."

 

 

Garrett Wilbanks

Houston, Texas (Clear Lake)

As a linebacker and defensive end at Clear Lake (Texas) HS under Coach Troy Aduddell, Wilbanks registered 47 tackles, seven sacks, and nine tackles for loss in his senior season. He received all-district recognition as well as academic all-district honors. Wilbanks also competed in track and is the son of Garrett and Dena Wilbanks.

 

Coach Carthel: "Garrett is really strong, both in the classroom and on the field."

 

 

Regis Wilson

Austin, Texas (LBJ)

As a wide receiver and running back at Austin (Texas) Lyndon B. Johnson HS, Wilson earned all-district first team honors under Coach Demo Odems. He is also a three-year letterwinner in basketball and track. Wilson is the son of Paul and Toni Wilson.

 

Coach Carthel: "Wilson comes from a solid Austin LBJ program that is known for producing great athletes over the years. He is a three-sport athlete and has shown well in every sport during his career."

 

 

Dexter Williams

Defensive Back • 5-11 • 175

Aldine, Texas (Nimitz)

Williams was named first team all-district under Coach David Suggs at Aldine Nimitz (Texas) HS. He also competed in track & field for three seasons for the Cougars. Williams was a three year letterman on the football field.

 

Coach Carthel: "Dexter can play any position in our secondary."

 

 

LaRay Woodard

Wide Receiver • 6-1 • 175

Big Spring, Texas (Big Spring)

Woodard played wide receiver and strong safety under Coach Phillip Ritchey at Big Spring (Texas) HS. He also competed in track, winning the District 4-4A 110 high hurdle championship and placing second at the State meet in the long jump with an effort of 23-8. Woodard is the son of Dennis and LaDonna Woodard.

 

Coach Carthel: "Woodard is a tremendous athlete that has had a lot of success on the football field as well as in track as a hurdler and long jumper. He has a good chance to qualify for state in more than one event this Spring. He has a knack for making big plays and should make an impact on the football field in the near future."
