Buffs Honored With All-America Selections
Jan. 23, 2009
CANYON, Texas - Four members of the 2008 West Texas A&M football team have been honored with selections to two recently-release All-America teams. Outside linebacker Jared Brock, wide receiver Charly Martin, offensive lineman J'Marcus Webb and quarterback Keith Null were each named to both the D2Football.com, as well as the Don Hansen's Football Gazette All-America teams. Brock, Martin and Webb earned first-team honors on the D2Football.com squad, with Null earning honorable mention status. Brock and Martin were tabbed as first-team selections on the Football Gazette team, with Webb earning third-team recognition and Null honorable mention. A native of Abernathy, Texas, Brock (6-1, 232, Sr-3L), Brock has already earned 2008 AFCA (American Football Coaches Association) All-America, as well as first team Associated Press Little All-America and Daktronics all-America honors. He was named to the Lone Star Conference South Division first-team and was selected as LSC-South Linebacker of the Year after leading the Buffs with 83 total tackles (43 solo, 40 assist). He also had a team-high 14 tackles for minus-72 yards in losses, as well as 6.5 sacks for minus-48 yards, three pass breakups, 10 quarterback hurries, a pair of fumble recoveries, two blocked kicks and one forced fumble. Martin (6-2, 210, Sr-3L), a native of Farmington, N.M., previously earned Associated Press Little All-America and Daktronics first-team All-America honors and was named LSC South Receiver of the Year while ranking first in the nation in receiving yards per game, as well as being among the national leaders in both total receptions and scoring. Martin literally re-wrote the WT receiving record book over the past five seasons. In WT's playoff loss to Abilene Christian, Martin set Division II one-game playoff records with 14 receptions for 343 yards and five touchdowns. Martin also holds LSC career marks in receptions (244) and TD catches (44).
Webb (6-8, 320, Jr-TR), a Mesquite, Texas, native, anchored a Buffalo offensive line unit that allowed just 19 sacks while gaining a school-record 7,079 yards in total offense this past season. Webb was a 12 game starter at left offensive tackle this past season, missing the Central Oklahoma contest due to injury. Lampasas, Texas, native Keith Null (6-4, 220, Sr-3L), concluded his career holding the WT single-season and career records for passing yardage, TDs and total offense and became the first WT quarterback to pass for 9,000 yards during his career. He ranked first, nationally, in passing yards per game and second in total offense and threw for at least 300 yards in all but two games this past season (he was pulled after throwing for 227 yards and two TDs against Tarleton and 261 yards and two TDs in two quarters against Northeastern State). He recorded his second 500-yard passing game of the season when he completed 42-of-63 passes for 595 yards and sevens TDs at Abilene Christian in the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs.
