Javelinas Await Buffs and Lady Buffs

CANYON, Texas - Lone Star Conference South action for West Texas A&M continues on Wednesday as the Buffs and Lady Buffs head to South Texas to square off against Texas A&M-Kingsville, with the women slated to start at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m. The No. 18 women's hoops team beat Midwestern State, 76-62, and Tarleton State, 75-72, last week to remain unbeaten in the conference; junior guard Courtney Lee was named LSC South Player of the Week for the second consecutive week after scoring 30 points, including a buzzer beating three-pointer to lift the Lady Buffs to victory over TSU. Lee has been a solid force all season, posting 12.4 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per game in addition to the second highest steal count, with 22, and the fourth highest assist mark, with 34. Junior Emily Brister also continues to be steady for the Lady Buffs with her 21.6 points per game and .912 free throw percentage (104-of-114). Freshman Joni Unruh came on strong in WT's last two games, grabbing 12 rebounds and scoring 27 points in addition to recording three assists and three steals. TAMU-Kingsville stands at 5-12 overall with a 1-3 conference mark and will hit the court Wednesday seeking to end a three-game losing streak. The Javelinas lost to Texas Woman's on Saturday despite a 19-point game from Lana Toki, who is averaging 10.0 points per game for TAMUK. On the men's side, the Buffs lost a tough 76-74 overtime game to Tarleton State on Saturday - which ended their five-game winning streak - and now continue their difficult road swing with a battle against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Wednesday. Senior Robert Lee continued his hot shooting from the floor last week as he recorded a career-high 31 points in the Buffs' 76-62 win over Midwestern State then tallied another 25 points in the loss to Tarleton State to push his average to 15.6 points per game. Joining Lee in double figure scoring is senior Chris Hinz, who is averaging 10.3 points per game while senior Tyler Cooper has 93 rebounds (5.2 rpg), 43 assists and 7.8 points per game, despite being held scoreless at TSU. Additionally, senior Andre Hill has been a steady force for the Buffs with his 90 rebounds (5.0 rpg) 157 points (8.7 ppg).
Texas A&M-Kingsville's men are 13-5 overall with a 2-1 conference record after losing to Tarleton State during its last time out. Three Javelinas have tied for the team high in scoring during their past two games as Reggie Love, Clyde Johnson and Naquawn Lee tallied 17 points apiece against Midwestern State before Johnson, Love and Stephen Story each scored 13 in the loss to TSU. |
