The West Texas A&M University men's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking, 50-47, overtime loss to Southwestern Oklahoma State University Saturday night in the Championship game of the WTAMU Coca-Cola/First United Bank Thanksgiving Shootout at the WTAMU Event Center.

Senior forward Jamil Terrell posted his third-straight double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds while senior guard Carl Lamb tallied 15 points and fellow senior forward Carlos Silva set a new WTAMU and Lone Star Conference record with 10 blocked shots, surpassing his own record of nine he set last season.

Terrell was named Tournament MVP, and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Silva, along with SWOSU's Jamaal Shell and Ike Smith, as well as Missouri Southern's Orestus Cavness and Arkansas Tech's Terrence Martin.

Arkansas Tech defeated Missouri Southern, 78-63 in Saturday's Consolation game.

Saturday's game was a defensive battle, an offensive struggle and a rematch of last year's WTAMU Thanksgiving Shootout, also won by SWOSU, 76-56.

WTAMU shot 35.7 percent (15-42) from the field, while SWOSU shot 32.3 percent (21-65). Despite outrebounding the Bulldogs, 41-33, the Buffs committed 20 turnovers compared to just 10 for SWOSU.

Both teams struggled in the opening of both halves, as the game was scoreless for the first three and a half minutes, until Bulldogs got on the board first on a layup by Lee J. Kirkpatrick at the 16:33 mark.

WTAMU took its biggest lead of the game at 17-8 on a 3-pointer from Lamb with 7:42 to play in the first half, only to have SWOSU charge back and take a 22-19 halftime lead, as the Bulldogs' 11-5 run was capped by a Lonnie Cooks trey with 52 seconds left.

SWOSU didn't score for nearly nine minutes to open the second half, as the Buffs went on an 8-0 run, taking a 27-22 lead at the 14:08 mark on a pair of free throws from junior guard Steve Jackson.

The Bulldogs finally got on the board at the 11:15 mark on a questionable goaltending call on Terrell, before finally making a basket as Marcel Justin hit a 3-pointer with 9:54 to play to pull within 30-27.

Silva gave WTAMU a 35-29 lead with 7:21 to go, making one of two free throws, before SWOSU drew back to tie it at 35-all on a layup from Malcolm Overton with 4:53 left.

Darron Lewis gave the Bulldogs a 39-36 lead with a layup at the 3:15 mark. The Buffs took a 40-39 lead with 2:09 on the clock on a layup from junior guard Jarvis Brown.

WTAMU was later called for a shot clock violation with 50.2 seconds left, turning the ball over to SWOSU.

After a Buff timeout, SWOSU worked the ball inside to Kirkpatrick, who was fouled by Silva. Kirkpatrick hit one of the two ensuing free throws with 35.1 seconds left to knot the score at 40-40.

After another WTAMU timeout with 24.9 seconds left in regulation, the Buffs set up for the game-winning attempt, but junior guard Govinda Thomas-Carter's jumper was off the mark with three seconds left, and SWOSU's Smith corralled the rebound and the Bulldogs called timeout with 1.2 ticks to play.

SWOSU heaved a three-quarter court pass to Davy Easterling, who battled Silva and hauled in the pass and got off a layup attempt that was contested by Jackson and rattled off the rim as the buzzer sounded.

39 seconds into the extra period, Lamb put WTAMU ahead, 42-40 with two free throws, but SWOSU's Overton had a tip-in to tie it at 42's with 4:06 to go.

A jumper from Lamb gave the Buffs their final lead with 3:55 to go. Shell drained a trey (his only points of the game) with 3:26 on the clock to put SWOSU ahead, 45-44 with 3:26 left.

Jon Gunn gave the Bulldogs a 47-44 lead at the 2:25 mark before Lamb drew WTAMU within 47-46 at 2:07. Lewis converted a three-point play with 47.3 seconds left before Jackson hit one of two free throws with 28.5 seconds on the clock for the final scoring at 50-47.

Terrell stole the SWOSU pass to give WTAMU the ball back with 17.4 seconds. but the Buffs couldn't get a tying score.

The Bulldogs return to the WTAMU Event Center on Thursday, Dec. 2 at 8 p.m., for an LSC Crossover clash with the Buffs, part of a doubleheader with the WTAMU women vs. SWOSU. WTAMU will then face Cameron University on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 8 p.m.
