Buffs Suffer 76-70 OT Defeat To Central Arkansas Friday

CONWAY, Ark. -- The West Texas A&M University men's basketball team suffered a 76-70 loss in overtime to the University of Central Arkansas Friday night at Conway, Ark. in the Buffs' 2004-05 season-opener.
After junior guard Govinda Thomas-Carter hit a pair of free throws with nine seconds left in regulation to give WTAMU a 60-57 lead, UCA's Lamar Grimes hit a 3-pointer as time ran out to force overtime.
Senior guard Carl Lamb netted a game-high 24 points, while Thomas-Carter added 18 points. Senior forward Richard Higginbotham tallied 10 points off the bench, while senior forward Jamil Terrell added nine points to go with his game-high 15 rebounds.
Grimes led UCA with 19 points.
WTAMU shot a paltry 29.1 percent (16-55) from the floor, while UCA was 23-52 (44.2 percent). The Buffs were 32-44 (72.7 percent) from the free throw line, while the Bears shot 72.2 percent (26-36)., including 12-14 in overtime.
UCA had 29 bench points compared to only 10 from WTAMU, and there were a total of 13 ties in the game.
WTAMU will travel Goodwell, Okla. to take on Oklahoma Panhandle State University on Monday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m.
The Buffs will host the Coca-Cola/First United Bank Thanksgiving Shootout on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 26-27 at the WTAMU Event Center. Southwestern Oklahoma State University will face Arkansas Tech University in the opener at 6 p.m., followed by WTAMU and Missouri Southern State University at 8 p.m. The consolation game will be on Saturday at 4 p.m., followed by the championship game at 6 p.m. The WTAMU women's team will play the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs on Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Shootout will be going on in conjunction with NCAA Basketball's Champion's Challenge.
