KINGSVILLE, Texas -- The West Texas A&M University men's basketball team was beaten, 75-67, Saturday by Texas A&M University-Kingsville at TAMU-K's Kleberg Bank Court at Kingsville, Texas, marking WTAMU's sixth-straight loss to the Javelinas at Kingsville.

WTAMU had its three-game win streak snapped, as the Buffs are now 17-6 overall and 6-2 in Lone Star Conference South Division play, sitting in second-place in the division standings. TAMU-K is in third-place with a 5-3 LSC South ledger, improving to 15-8 overall.

Three Buffs posted double-digits, led by senior guard Ronnie Holmes with 19 points, hitting four 3-pointers, while sophomore guard Kyle Shields netted 12 points and senior forward Patrick Culver tossed in 10 points to go with four blocks, as well as eight rebounds, tying junior guard/forward Damien Lolar for the team-high honors.

TAMU-K was paced by Remi Yusuf with 25 points and Ricky Huckaby's 23 points, hitting four 3-pointers, including a deep fading back trey as the shot clock was winding down late in the game.

WTAMU shot a paltry 38.6 percent (22-of-57) from the field, including 7-of-19 (.368) from behind the 3-point arc, but only hit 16-of-23 (.696) at the free throw line. TAMU-K was 23-of-46 (.500) from the field, hitting 5-of-11 (.455) 3-pointers, as well as 75.0 percent (24-of-32) from the charity stripe.

The Javelinas took a 20-12 lead before the Buffs chipped away to tie the score at 32-all at the half.

Holmes hit a 3-pointer to put WTAMU ahead, 35-34, just 1:25 into the second-half, but that would be the Buffs' last lead of the game, as the Javelinas ran out to a 44-35 lead. WTAMU closed to 44-43 on a three-point play from Lolar, but TAMU-K later opened a 56-46 lead.

 

 

The Buffs cut the gap to 56-51, after a pair of Lolar free throws with 4:55 to go. On the Javelinas' ensuing possession, Huckaby hit a fading back 3-pointer as the shot clock wound down with 4:22 left in the game for a 59-51 TAMU-K lead that took the wind out of the Buffs' sails, as they never got any closer than five points.

WTAMU returns home to host Abilene Christian University at the First United Bank Center on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 8 p.m. in the second half of an LSC South twinbill with the WTAMU women.
