Buffs Collect 90-82 Victory Over Abilene Christian
Feb. 7, 2008
ABILENE, Texas - The West Texas A&M men's hoops team picked up a 90-82 victory over Abilene Christian on Thursday, improving to 15-6 on the season and 5-1 in Lone Star Conference South play. Senior Robert Lee led the way with a team-high 25 points and a team-high six steals, while senior Andre Hill set a new career record with 21 points while also pulling down eight rebounds. The Buffs opened up the scoring with flair as Lee grabbed a steal, thundered down court and dunked the ball to spark an early 14-5 run. WT never looked back from its opening points as the Buffs did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game, holding the Wildcats to shooting just 39.4% from the floor as opposed to their season average of 51.7%. West Texas A&M went into halftime with a 42-35 lead after shooting an impressive 60% from the floor, led by Lee's 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor. Junior Kyle Shields finished the first stanza with 10 points while the rest of WT's scoring was spread out among five Buffs. Senior Kyle Shields, who tied his career high with 16 points, pushed WT's lead to 10 in the second half by sinking two free throws with 18:21 on the clock. However, ACU chipped away at West Texas A&M's lead and came within one point of the Buffs at the 8:02 mark when Stephen Musa capitalized on a WT turnover and dunked the ball. The Buffs rebuilt their lead by way of a 12-2 run sparked by a Hill jumper followed by two made free throws by Keon Grant. The run put the nail in the coffin as it was too much for the Wildcats to overcome and the Buffs finished ahead by eight points.
Senior Chris Hinz also was solid for WT, finishing with 11 points and seven rebounds, while fellow classmate Tyler Cooper pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds while adding four points. West Texas A&M continues on its long road trip by traveling to San Angelo on Saturday for an 8 p.m. match-up against Angelo State. |
