Buffs Pull Away To Tame 'Cats In 97-83 Shootout Saturday

The West Texas A&M University men's basketball team rode a career night from senior forward Jamil Terrell and junior guard Ronnie Holmes, along with three consecutive 3-pointers from senior guard Carl Lamb to pull away from Abilene Christian University, 97-83, in a Lone Star Conference South Division shootout Saturday night in front of a season-high 1,793 at the WTAMU Event Center.

Terrell pulled down a career-high 19 rebounds and tied a career-high with 26 points for his ninth double-double of the season, helping the Buffs set a season-high point output. Lamb finished with 14 points, including 4-of-9 from 3-point land, including three on consecutive possessions in the second half, while junior guard Ronnie Holmes had a career-high 13 points to go with four steals and three assists.

ACU was led by 29 points from David Baxter, while Hakim Rasul had a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Joe Carr netted 16 points, while Adrian Scott added 11.

The Buffs won two games in a row for the first time since Dec. 30-Jan. 4, and are now 10-11 overall, 4-2 in LSC South play. ACU lost its fourth-straight and 10 of its last 11, falling to 8-14 overall and 1-6 in the LSC South.

The two teams will face off again in exactly one week, as WTAMU will travel to Abilene, Texas, next Saturday, Feb. 12.

WTAMU shot 51.9 percent (27-of-52) from the field, including 6-of-23 (26.1 percent) from 3-point land.

ACU was 25-of-62 (40.3 percent) field goal shooting, with 7-of-26 (26.9 percent) coming from behind the 3-point arc.

It was a foul-plagued game, as there were a combined 64 fouls whistled, with ACU losing three players and WTAMU one to fouling out.

 

 

The Buffs were 37-of-55 (67.3 percent) from the free throw line, including 27-of-35 (77.1 percent) in the second half. Terrell was 10-of-15 and freshman guard Kyle Shields was 7-of-9.

The Wildcats shot 83.9 percent (26-of-31) from the charity stripe, as both Baxter and Hasul were 11-of-13.

WTAMU had a overwhelming, 46-28, edge on the rebounds, including 17 on the offensive end. The Buffs' bench outscored their counterparts, 39-1.

There were six ties and seven lead changes in the first half, as ACU took a 45-44 lead into intermission.

ACU opened leads up of as much as five points on several occasions, but the Buffs wouldn't let the Wildcats pull away. With ACU up, 71-67, Lamb hit the first of his three-straight treys at the 6:39 mark, then hit the second off a dish from Holmes the next time down the court to give WTAMU the lead for good at 73-71 with 6:16 to. ACU called a timeout to try to slow the Lamb and Buff Express down, but it was to no avail, as Lamb hit his third in a row and WTAMU never looked back.

Holmes gave WTAMU its first double-digit lead of the game at 88-78 with a pair of free throws with 1:38 on the clock and Lamb added a dunk to cap the scoring and the Buffs' largest lead with 15 seconds left.

The Buffs now hit the road for five-consecutive games, as WTAMU heads to San Angelo, Texas on Thursday, Feb. 10, for a rematch with Angelo State University, whom the Buffs defeated last Thursday, 72-56. WTAMU will then head to Abilene to face ACU again, on Saturday, Feb. 12.
