Holmes Leads WTAMU To 74-60 Win Over TAMU-Kingsville Saturday

Senior guard Ronnie Holmes tallied career-highs with 24 points and eight rebounds in leading the West Texas A&M University men's basketball team to a 74-60 win over Texas A&M University-Kingsville Saturday night at the First United Bank Center in a Lone Star Conference South Division match-up with second-place in the division at stake. The win improved WTAMU to 12-0 at home the season and the Buffs are on a 16-game home winning streak, in improving to 16-5 overall and 5-1 in LSC South action.
TAMU-K dropped its third in the last four games and the Javelinas are now 13-8 overall and 3-3 in LSC South play.
Saturday's victory was WTAMU's sixth home win over TAMU-K in the last seven games at Canyon, as the Buffs now hold a 30-18 all-time lead over the Javelinas.
Holmes was one of three Buffs in double-figures, followed by junior guard Damien Lolar's 18 points and 12 points from senior forward Patrick Culver, who both put on a dunking display throughout the night.
TAMU-K was led by 15 points from Kia Griffin, while Remi Yusuf added 13 points and Roberto Flores tossed in 10.
WTAMU shot a warmish 25-of-47 (.532) from the field, hitting 5-of-15 (.333) from 3-point range. The Buffs hit 19-of-30 (.633) at the free throw line.
TAMU-K was 22-of-63 (.349) on the night, hitting 3-of-13 (.231) behind the arc and were 13-of-22 (.591) at the charity stripe.
After a 4-4 start, the Buffs pulled away and never looked back, opening a 15-8 lead after a pair of free throws from sophomore forward Tyler Cooper at the 12:55 mark.
Holmes hit one of his four 3-pointers with 6:13 left in the half for WTAMU's first double-digit lead at 32-20 and the Buffs led by double-digits from there on out, taking a 45-27 halftime lead.
The lead grew to 67-41 on a fast-break layup from senior guard Govinda Thomas-Carter with 4:18 on the game clock and WTAMU cruised to the win.
The Buffs open a two-game road swing when they head West across the state line on Monday, Feb. 6 to take on border-rival Eastern New Mexico University at 6:30 p.m. Central Time.
WTAMU heads to Kingsville, Texas on Saturday, Feb. 11 for a rematch against TAMU-Kingsville at 4 p.m.
