The West Texas A&M University men's basketball team outscored Angelo State University, 35-19, in the second half, as the Buffs pulled away from a 37-all tie at intermission and won going away, 72-56, in a Lone Star Conference South Division contest Thursday night at the WTAMU Event Center.

The Buffs improve to 9-11 overall and 3-2 in LSC South action with the win, their fifth-straight over the Rams, taking a 26-14 series lead.

ASU lost its fifth-straight and fell to 8-13 overall and 1-5 in LSC South play.

The two teams will face each other again in a week, as WTAMU travels to San Angelo, Texas next Thursday, Feb. 10, for the rematch.

Senior forward Jamil Terrell tallied 20 points, including 10-of-17 from the free throw line, and pulled down nine rebounds, one board shy of his ninth double-double.

Classmates, guard Carl Lamb and forward Jason Campbell recorded 13 points apiece, while three other Buffs tallied seven points each.

ASU was led by Rashawn Childs with 20 points, followed by Kenny Smith with 11.

The Buffs outrebounded the Rams, 46-31, including 18 on the offensive end. Both teams committed 20 turnovers each, as WTAMU scored 26 points off ASU's turnovers, compared to the Rams scoring 14 points off the Buffs' miscues.

Neither team shot the lights out, as WTAMU was 39.2 percent (20-of-51) from the field, compared to 21-of-58 (36.2 percent) for ASU.

WTAMU was 5-of-22 (22.7 percent) from behind the 3-point arc, while ASU was 5-of-19 (26.3 percent) from 3-point land, but were 0-for-11 in the second half.

The first half was a see-saw battle, as there were eight ties annd three lead changes, with ASU's biggest lead of six points at 8-2 and WTAMU's largest lead was six points at 29-23 with 4:49 to play on a 3-pointer by junior guard Jarvis Brown.

 

 

The teams went into halftime knotted at 37-all, but the Buffs charged out of intermission with a 6-0 run, capped by putback by Terrell with 18:10 to go. ASU cut the difference to four points on two different occasions, but couldn't get any closer.

The Buffs' lead reached double-digits at 60-50 at the 5:51 mark on a jumper by Campbell, and junior guard Ronnie Holmes hit one-of-two free throws with 32 seconds left for the final scoring and WTAMU's largest lead of the night.

The Buffs will now go for just their third two-game winning streak of the season on Saturday night, when WTAMU hosts Abilene Christian University in an 8 p.m. tilt following the WTAMU women's contest.

ACU will bring a three-game losing streak into Saturday's match-up, as the Wildcats are 8-13 overall and 1-5 in the LSC South after losing at Eastern New Mexico University, 89-72.
