San Angelo, Texas – LaMarshall Corbett showed why he is the leading scorer in the Lone Star Conference as he knocked down 33 points to lead Angelo State to am 84-78 win over West Texas A&M, Wednesday night at the Junnell Center in San Angelo, Texas.

With the loss, WTAMU falls to 11-9 overall, 2-3 in LSC South play, while ASU improves to 11-8 overall, 3-2 LSC South.

“Corbett is one of the outstanding players in this league,” said WT head coach Rick Cooper. “We left him unguarded too many times and he will beat you.

“We came out strong, but didn’t sustain that over the course of the game. It’s hard to lose; everybody starts feeling the stress and starts pressing. Its counterproductive, but we still have time to improve as a team and stay in the LSC South race.”

The two teams battled through a tight first half, with the Buffs opening a five-point lead, 25-19, with just under six minutes to play in the half.

Angelo State then ran off seven straight points to take a 29-26 lead with 3:00 to play in the half and would hold their biggest lead of the game, 38-30, with 56 seconds remaining in the first half.

A layup by Derrick Webster elevated the Ram’s lead to 74-66 with 4:35 to play.

The Buffs cut the gap to five points, as Joe Mincey fed LaDarius Hall for a layup with 3:06 remaining, then Dotson knocked down a jump with 2:40 left, cutting the Ram’s lead to 75-70.

ASU was paced by Corbett’s 33 points, while Stavon Williams had 21, Johnny Barnes contributed 12 and Johnny Burch scored 10 points. Derrick Webster’s five rebounds were high for the Rams.

The Rams really produced from behind the three-point arc, where as a team they hit 7-of-15. ASU shot 47.9 percent from the field and hit 29-of-35 free throws (82.9 pct.).
