Buffs Gored By Javelinas, 66-58, Thursday For LSC South Lead
Jan. 27, 2005
KINGSVILLE, Texas --- The West Texas A&M University men's basketball continued two trends Thursday in the Buffs' 66-58 loss at Texas A&M University-Kingsville in a Lone Star Conference South Division contest. WTAMU continued its poor shooting and the Buffs lost at Kingsville for the fifth-consecutive time.
WTAMU continued its win-loss pattern of the last eight games, in losing for the fourth time in the last seven games, falling to 8-11 overall and 2-2 in LSC South play.
TAMU-K maintains its LSC South lead, as the Javelinas won their third in a row and five of their last six, in moving to 12-6 overall and 3-0 in LSC South action.
The Buffs shot a paltry 39.6 percent (19-of-48) from the field, including 4-of-17 (23.5 percent) from 3-point land. WTAMU struggled from the free throw line as well, hitting just 16-of-28 (57.1 percent).
TAMU-K shot 49.0 percent (25-of-51) for the field, including 57.1 percent (12-of-21) in the second half. The Javelinas were 3-of-8 (37.5 percent) from behind the 3-point arc.
WTAMU was led by 14 points from senior forward Jamil Terrell, including 12 in the second half, while junior guard Govinda Thomas-Carter added 11 points. Senior guard Carl Lamb snared a career-high and game-high 11 rebounds, as WTAMU held a 38-30 rebounding advantage, including 17 on the offensive end.
TAMU-K had four starters in double-digits, led by Richard Gonzalez with 15 points, while Quendale Allensworth added 13 points, all in the second half. Robert Hamilton tallied 11 points to go with a team-high eight rebounds and five assists, while Juan Lanauze added 10 points.
WTAMU had its only lead of the game at 2-0 13 seconds into the game on a layup by senior forward Jason Campbell. TAMU-K then reeled off six-straight points, forcing a WTAMU timeout.
The Javelinas opened up a 20-11 lead, then Hamilton later hit a jumper with 3:55 left in the half to extend TAMU-K's lead to 31-17, its largest of the game. That would be the Javelinas last points of the half as the Buffs netted the last seven points of the half on a 3-pointer from Lamb and four points from junior guard Jarvis Brown, to close to 31-24 at halftime.
After Gonzalez opened the second half with a layup, Thomas-Carter hit a 3-pointer, then a jumper, followed by two free throws and the Buffs were down, 33-31, with 16:19 left.
WTAMU had possession, with a chance to tie or take the lead, but the Buffs committed one of their 16 turnovers, as Allensworth had a swipe and layup, and WTAMU never got any closer. The Javelinas opened up a 10-point lead at 48-38, and WTAMU never got within seven points for the rest of the game.
The Buffs return home to host traditional rivals Angelo State University and Abilene Christian University on Thursday, Feb. 3 and Saturday, Feb. 5, respectively.
