Buffs Shine From Start To Finish In 81-52 Win Over Indians

The West Texas A&M University Buff basketball team had four players in double figures in a start to finish domination over Midwestern State University, 81-52, Thursday night in the Buffs' Lone Star Conference South Division opener.
WTAMU was playing without head coach Rick Cooper, whose father past away Thursday morning. The Buffs improve to 7-9 overall and are now 1-0 in the LSC South.
MSU slips to 9-8 overall and 1-1 in LSC South play.
Senior guard Carl Lamb netted a game-high 18 points, including hitting four 3-pointers, while senior forward Carlos Silva notched 11 points. Junior guard Jarvis Brown tallied a career-high 12 points, while senior forward Jamil Terrell posted 11 points and tied a game-high with nine rebounds, leading WTAMU to a 41-29 rebounding edge.
Freshman guard Kyle Shields dished out a career-high eight assists.
MSU was led by 16 points from Jay January, while Justin James added 10 points and nine rebounds before fouling out.
The Buffs converted MSU's 15 turnovers into 23 points, while the Indians' tallied nine points off WTAMU's 13 turnovers (their second-lowest of the season).
WTAMU outscored MSU, 34-18, in points in the paint and the Buffs' bench outscored their counterparts, 23-12.
Lamb hit a 3-pointer at the 12:33 mark of the first half to give the Buffs a 22-10 lead and the advantage reached 20 points for the first time at 33-13 with 7:03 to go on a pair of free throws by Brown.
WTAMU held a 41-25 lead at halftime, shooting 44.4 percent (12-of-27) from the field in the first half, including 7-of-16 (43.8 percent) from 3-point land.
The Buffs also held a 20-11 rebounding edge in the first half.
MSU closed the deficit to 11 at 52-41 with 14:31 to play on a pair of free throws from Jose Nava, but that would be as close as the Indians would get to hunting the Buffs.
WTAMU cranked the lead back to 20 at 68-48 with 7:12 remaining on a layup from Brown and the margin hit 30 points with 1:15 left on a 3-pointer from senior forward Jason Campbell.
The Buffs return to the court on Saturday, Jan. 22, when they host 13th-ranked Texas A&M-University Commerce, who improved to 14-3 overall and 1-1 in LSC South after defeating Eastern New Mexico University (WTAMU's opponent on Monday), 97-90, Thursday at Portales, N.M.
