WTAMU Men's Hoops Drops Road Contest to Angelo State
Jan. 17, 2007
SAN ANGELO, Texas - Senior Damien Lolar registered his ninth double-double of the season, contributing 33 points and 16 rebounds, but it was not enough to lift the West Texas A&M men's basketball team in its Lone Star Conference South Division opener on Wednesday night, falling on the road to Angelo State, 94-84 at the Junell Center. The Buffs got off to a hot start in the contest building a 21-8 lead, behind the impressive shooting of senior Kevin "Chip" Green, who was a perfect 3-of-3 from beyond the three point arc, and contributed 11 points, while Lolar put up a game-high 15 points and 10 rebounds during in the opening period. Green continued his hot shooting, finishing the contest with 22 points, marking the first time this season he has cracked the 20 point plateau. The Philadelphia, Pa., native is averaging 17.3 points per game during his last three contests. The big lead by the visitors, which reached as high as 13 points at one point, was chipped away primarily by the inside presence of 6-9 forward Marcus Hubbard, who poured in 15 points in the game first 20 minutes. Junior Chris Hinz was also productive during the first half, putting up 12 points but also collected four fouls before halftime as Buffs took a 45-42 advantage into the intermission. The second half was a different story as the Rams were able to blitz WTAMU with hot shooting and a large dose of Hubbard, who connected on his first five shots of the second period, including two from long distance, as ASU outscored the Buffs 14-5 to open the period. For the game, the Buffs shot 44 percent, while Angelo State finished with a .500 shooting percentage as a team, including a 56.7 percentage in the second half when it outscored the visitors from Canyon 52-39. The Buffs fall to 7-7 on the season and 0-1 in LSC South play, while ASU improves to 6-9 overall and 1-0 in South Division contests.
The West Texas A&M men's basketball is back in action on Saturday as it hosts LSC South foe Abliene Christian in an 8 p.m. contest. The Buffs will also be in action at home on Monday when they host New Mexico Highlands in a makeup game originally scheduled for Dec. 30, but was postponed because of inclement weather. Tip-off for the Highlands contest is slated for 7 p.m. |
