Jan. 13, 2005
ADA, Okla. -- The West Texas A&M University men's basketball team got a career-high 20 points from senior forward Carlos Silva to lead the Buffs to a 92-60 rout over East Central University Thursday night in a Lone Star Conference crossover contest at ECU's Kerr Activities Center.
WTAMU won for the second time in three games and is now 6-8 on the year. ECU lost for the third time in four games and is now 9-5.
The Buffs head to Durant, Okla., on Saturday, Jan. 15 to take on Southeastern Oklahoma State University, who is 10-4 after blasting Eastern New Mexico University, 84-62, Thursday night.
Senior forward Richard Higginbotham added 12 points, including tying a career-high by hitting three treys. Fellow senior forwards Jason Campbell and Jamil Terrell tallied 11 points each while junior guard Govinda Thomas-Carter also matched a career-high by hitting three treys and finished with nine points.
Terrell also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to record his sixth double-double of the year, leading WTAMU to a 45-24 rebounding advantage, including 15 offensive boards.
Freshman guard Kyle Shields also dished out a career-high seven assists, while junior guard Ronnie Holmes also established a new career-high with four dimes, as WTAMU set a new season-high by dishing out 27 asssists.
ECU was led by James Nave with 17 points, followed by 12 points each from Darren Randall, last week's LSC North Player of the Week, and Larry Smith.
Silva surpassed his previous career-high of 14 points in the first half, tallying eight-straight points, on two three-point plays and a slam dunk to spark a 31-8 run to break the game open. Silva's streak was sandwiched between a pair of treys from Thomas-Carter, then Holmes had the alley and Terrell had the oop for a fast break slam to open up a 29-16 lead with 8:15 to go.
After a bucket from ECU's Terrell Carpenter, senior guard Carl Lamb hit a trey, then Higginbotham hit back-to-back shots from behind the arc, followed by a free throw and another three-point play from Silva and the Buffs had a 42-18 lead with 2:55 left on the clock and WTAMU coasted to a 48-26 lead at intermission.
Smith tried to single-handedly cut into the gap by hitting eight points in a two-minute span to close to 19 points twice, the last at 60-41 with 14:16 left in the game, but Shields had a steal and layup, then junior guard Steve Jackson hit Thomas-Carter for a fast break 3-pointer and the lead was up over 20 from there on out.
Campbell hit a basket to stretch the lead to 30 for the first time at 73-43 with 10:55 on the clock and the Buffs had their biggest lead at 36 twice, the first on a layup from junior guard Jarvis Brown at 86-50 with 6:26 left and Lamb later hit his third trey at 4:36 to make it 89-53.
In all, 11 of the 12 Buffs in uniform got into the scoring column and five players hit at least one 3-pointer.
