Central Oklahoma too much for Buffs, Take 95-64 Win
Jan. 9, 2010
Edmond, Okla. – West Texas A&M felt the onslaught of a high scoring Central Oklahoma offensive attack, as they fell to the Bronchos, 95-64, Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House in Edmond, Okla. WTAMU suffered its second loss in a row and their sixth loss away from the First United Bank Center this season, as its record fell to 9-6 overall. The win improves UCO to 11-4. “This game was probably over before we entered the gym today,” said WT head coach Rick Cooper. “UCO is a high-powered offensive team and we knew we could not get into a running game with them. “At times, it would have been better for us to just let the shot clock expire,” Cooper continued. “At least, that way we could re-set our defense. As it turned out, they got rebounds and beat us down the court. It’s my fault for not instilling in the team the idea of how to play against this team. We just aren’t mentally tough enough, yet, to beat a good team like UCO.” UCO, which entered the game riding a six-game win streak which had seen them average 90 points over that span, quickly showed they weren’t letting up for this contest, either. Much of the damage was done from long-distance, where the Bronchos hit 10 of 19 three point attempts. The first half was all Bronchos, as they opened a 10 point lead in the game’s early minutes and stretched it to as many as 17 points on two occasions, including at the half when they led 49-32. Contributing to the Buffs’ slow start was their committing 15 first-half turnovers and a general inability to keep UCO from scoring, as the Bronchos shot 61 percent from the floor over the first stanza. The second half was more of the same as UCO stretched the lead to 28 points at 71-43 by the 11:51 mark and upped the margin to the final margin of 31 points at the final buzzer
LaDarius Hall led the Buffs with his 20-point effort, while Chris Tucker scored 10 to finish as the only other WT individual in double-figures. Donnie Kidd had a team-high four rebounds for the Buffs. WT turned the ball over 13 times. As a team, the Buffs hit 22-of-55 from the field for 40 percent, while UCO connected on 34 of 58 for 59 percent. UCO saw five players hit double-digit scoring totals. Dauntae Williams scored a game 25, Eric Cazenave scored 20, Tyler Phillips had 18, Shane Carroll finished with 16 and Chris Rhymes tallied 12 points. Williams and Cazenave each had a game-high six rebounds. The Buffs return home to open LSC South play on Wednesday, Jan. 13, as they host Texas A&M-Kingsville. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. CST. |
