The West Texas A&M University Buffs were outscored, 37-20, in the second half as the Buffs were overtaken by the University of Central Oklahoma, 64-58, Saturday night in Lone Star Conference crossover action at the WTAMU Event Center.

The Buffs had a 28-17 halftime lead, but the Bronchos only committed one turnover and shot 50.0 percent in the second half to streak past the Buffs, who struggled from the free throw line.

UCO's leading scorer, Deshone Henderson, netted a game-high 23 points, 17 after halfime, while Jason Greene posted all 12 of his points in the second stanza.

WTAMU was led by senior forward Jamil Terrell's 13 points and eight rebounds and swatted a career-high seven shots, while junior guard Govinda Thomas-Carter added 11 points and six rebounds.

The Buffs shot 43.8 percent (21-of-48) from the field, including 6-of-18 (33.3 percent) from 3-point land. The statistical difference though was at the free throw line, where the Buffs were a trifling 10-of-25 (40.0 percent). WTAMU also committed 21 turnovers, which UCO converted into 22 points.

The Bronchos shot 37.7 percent (23-of-61) from the field, including 50.0 percent (5-of-10) on 3-pointers. UCO was 13-of-23 (56.5 percent) from the charity stripe.

UCO had a 41-37 rebounding edge, including 16 offensive rebounds.

The Bronchos whittled the halftime margin to one within four minutes of the second half, closing to 33-32 with 16:21 to go on a Henderson layup before WTAMU regained some breathing room by going on a 9-2 run capped by a layup from freshman guard Kyle Shields to give the Buffs a 42-34 lead with 13:45 to go.

Down 48-44, UCO reeled off a 17-5 run, taking the lead for good in the middle of the streak at 49-48 with 6:24 to play on a pair of free throws from B.J. Raney, opening up a 61-49 lead at the 3:01 mark on two Henderson free throws.

 

 

The Buffs got within 61-58 with 28 seconds to go on a 3-pointer from junior guard Jarvis Brown, but UCO hit 3-of-4 free throws from there on out to secure the victory.

WTAMU is now 5-8 on the year, and wraps up crossover action next week on the road, traveling to Ada, Okla. to take on East Central University on Thursday, Jan. 13 and continuing on to Durant, Okla. to face Southeastern Oklahoma State University on Saturday, Jan. 15.

Both contests are part of doubleheaders with the WTAMU women, who tip off at 6 p.m.

The Buffs return home on Jan. 20, opening up LSC South play against Midwestern State University in a doubleheader at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
