General:The lone starter returning to the lineup in 2008-09, Shields is a talented point guard, equally gifted at both distributing the ball as well as having the ability to score. He has big-game experience, having started two LSC tournament championship contests, as well as making several NCAA tournament appearances. 2007-08: Shields was a 29-game starter at point guard for the Buffaloes, averaging nearly 33 minutes per contest. He posted per-game averages of 9.4 points, 2.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists, in addition to having a 1.39 assist-turnover ratio. He was the Buffs' leading scorer on six separate occasions, He tallied a then-season-high 15 points in a loss to Lubbock Christian on Dec. 17, then produced a game-high and season high of 16 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor during a road victory over Eastern New Mexico on Jan. 19. Shields tied his high point game on Feb. 7, as he totalled 16 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field and 8-of 12 from the free throw line against ACU. 2006-07: Shields redshirted in 2006-07 after suffering a preseason injury. 2005-06: In his second season in the program, Shields emerged as a leader on the floor, starting 26 games. He finished third on the team with 91 assists, while also contributing 8.4 points per contest. Shields exploded for his biggest outing of the season on Feb. 22 against Midwestern State as he poured in a career-high 25 points, most coming from the free throw line, where he converted 13-of-16 attempts. He made an impact in the LSC Championship clinching victory over Tarleton State on March 4, registering 16 points. 2004-05 Shields saw action in 29 games, making 10 starting appearances. He averaged 3.8 points, 1.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 0.4 steals per game and netted a career-high 13 points in a loss at Tarleton State, one of two games where he posted double-digit points. Shields dished out three or more assists in nine games, including career-high eight in a win over Midwestern State. He had career-high two steals in two games and pulled down a career-high five rebounds in a loss at Angelo State. High School:Shields led Amarillo (Texas) Palo Duro HS to a 32-2 record in the 2003-04 season. For his efforts, he earned first-team all-District 3-4A honors following each of his four years of high school, as well as all-Region honors and averaged 18 points and five assists per game during his senior year. He played for the AAU West Texas Extreme team, leading them to consecutive appearances in the AAU BCI National Tournament.
