CANYON, Texas - Former West Texas A&M University catcher Kent Wright has signed a contract to play in the New York State League during its upcoming 2008 season. Wright will be assigned to a specific team during the upcoming weeks.

The switch-hitting right-hander was invited to participate in the Midwest Indy Pro Showcase, held in Detroit, Mich., during June 14-15. The Showcase provided an opportunity for young talent to be exposed to developmental leagues and teams which might not otherwise be able to scout young talent. Wright's performance at the camp resulted in his selection to the New York developmental league.

A two-year letterwinner at catcher while at WT during the 2007 and 2008 seasons, Wright also saw duty in a utility role. During the recently completed 2008 season, he started 29 of 30 contests and ranked among team leaders in both fielding percentage (.965) as well as putouts (115). Additionally, he finished the season on a strong note, batting .385 over the final three weeks of the campaign.

"West Texas A&M provided the opportunity to play baseball for the past two years, as well as receive my college education" said Wright. "It gave me the opportunity for more playing time, which really helped me to make this advance in my career."

Wright, who is the son of Peggy Wright and Neal McCall of St. John, Wash., recently completed his degree in Wildlife Biology. He plans to return to WTAMU next fall to assist on the staff of new Buff head baseball coach Matt Vanderburg.
