April 26, 2009
PORTALES, New Mexico - The Greyhounds of Eastern New Mexico used a four run eighth inning to top the Buffs of West Texas A&M, 9-1, at Greyhound Field in Portales. The Buffs finish the season with a 20-33 overall record while the Greyhounds move into the Lone Star Conference Tournament as the fifth seed for the school's first playoff appearance in its 18 year history. "I'm so proud of this team for taking the steps to put WT baseball in a position to be successful in the upcoming years" said WT head coach Matt Vanderburg "It's been an honor to coach these seniors that have been through a lot of change in the last four years at WT, the returners we have coming back now know what it's like to compete in the LSC and we'll be more prepared next season." The Buffs started off the scoring in the top of the first inning, as Coty Wilson (SR, China Spring, Texas) lined out to left field to score teammate Heath Baker (JR, Highland Village, Texas). The Greyhounds tied the game in the bottom of the fourth and took the lead in the fifth as they plated one run in each inning to take a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning. ENMU broke the game open in the seventh and eight innings, as they scored seven runs in those two innings to pick up the game four victory, 9-1. Brandon Hickey (SR, Odessa, Texas) picked up the loss on the mound (5-5) for the Buffs, giving up six runs on nine hits in 7.0 innings of work. "Congratulations to Eastern for making the LSC Tournament" said Vanderburg " Coach Clabaugh and Coach Jones have done a great job with those guys to be successful and I wish them the best of luck in Abilene."
