April 21, 2006
The West Texas A&M University baseball team took both games of a twinbill against Tarleton State University in perfect baseball conditions on Friday afternoon. After winning a nine inning contest 12-10, WTAMU took charge of the Texans in a 3-2 seven inning win.
WTAMU surrendered early runs, giving up a pair of runs in the first frame before reclaiming the lead with a run in the home half of the inning and a two in the second. They increased their lead to 5-2 in the third inning thanks to a two-run homer from sophomore designated hitter Brady Ribinskas before the Texans scored a run in each of the following two innings. After taking a 7-3 lead, the Buffs surrendered six runs in the top of the sixth before taking advantage of errors by the Texan defense to take an 11-10 lead in the seventh, adding a twelfth run in the home half of the eighth inning.
Buffs senior Brandon Wright picked up his fourth win of the season, pitching 3.1 shutout innings in relief of sophomore starter Cody Sessions. Wright faced 12 batters, giving up only two hits and striking out two. Juniors A.J. Knight and Cody Dean, playing right and left fields respectively each went 3-5 at the plate with Knight posting a pair of RBI and Dean crossing the plate three times. All together, six members of the Buffs' lineup drove in at least a run, with Knight and Ribinskas each posting a pair.
Sophomore third baseman Brian Schupp led WTAMU's offense in the afternoon's second game with a 2-3 effort at the plate, accounting for two of the Buffs' RBI with a two-run game-winning blast in the third inning. Junior second baseman Matt Ray accounted for the other run in the game, also going 2-3 at the plate.
