Buffs Drop Nightcap to RiverHawks, 12-9
April 17, 2009 TAHLEQUAH, Oklahoma -The RiverHawks of Northeaster Oklahoma used a four run bottom of the second inning to defeat the Buffs of West Texas A&M, 12-9, on Friday afternoon in game two of Lone Star Conference action at Rousey Field in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The loss drops WT to 19-29 on the season with a 12-25 LSC mark, while NSU improves to 19-28-1 with a 14-23-1 conference record. "Once again we couldn't get hits when we needed them" said WT head coach Matt Vanderburg "You shouldn't out-hit a team and still lose the ballgame by three runs." WT plated two runs in the top of the first inning, as Rob Mann (JR, Duncanville, Texas) drove in teammate Joe Inzone (JR, Spring Valley, California) on a homer to right center field. The Buffs plated two more runs in the second, highlighted by a Heath Baker (JR, Highland Village, Texas) RBI single to score Tyler Reagan (JR, Lubbock, Texas) to give WT the early 4-0 lead. NSU tied the game in the home half of the second inning, as they scored four runs on four hits to knot the game at 4-4 after two complete innings of play. The two teams traded runs until the fourth and fifth innings, as the RiverHawks scored three runs in both innings to take a commanding 11-6 lead. WT tried to rally in the top of the ninth but came up short, as they plated three runs on five hits. The inning was highlighted by a Coty Wilson (SR, China Spring, Texas) two run single to right field to score teammates Mann and Brad Elders (SO, Amarillo, Texas). Brandon Hickey (SR, Odessa, Texas) picked up the loss on the mound (5-4) for the Buffs, allowing three runs on two hits in 1.1 innings of relief work.
The Buffs and RiverHawks are set to hit the diamond tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 pm for doubleheader action to wrap up the Lone Star Conference weekend series. |
